With over 40 years of marketing experience in a variety of industries, I can offer my Pitt-Johnstown students real-life perspectives. My experiences range from retail, commercial real estate, professional services, manufacturing, and government contracting.
After graduating from UPJ with a degree in Journalism, I began working at a local advertising agency where I was responsible for all aspects of account management and creative for several banks, a small hotel chain, and a professional summer theater.
From there I joined the former Crown American Corporation, a developer and operator of regional shopping malls, hotels, and office buildings. During my 18 years, I was responsible for corporate communications, served as the company’s spokesperson, and oversaw the marketing efforts at 27 regional shopping malls. I was also responsible for forming an in-house advertising agency at Crown American where we were recognized with various awards for marketing and public relations excellence including a roll-out of an interactive web program.
While at Crown American I played a major role in helping the company transition from being privately held to becoming a public entity (Crown American Realty Trust) listed on the New York Stock Exchange. I was involved in the road show for the Initial Public Offering (IPO) and various investor relations activities. This experience led me back to classroom, but this time as a student, in the MBA program at St. Francis University where I graduated in 1998 with an emphasis in Marketing.
It was while I was at Crown American that I starting teaching. From 1999 to 2003 I was teaching as a volunteer for the industry’s trade association, the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). I taught various industry courses at the association’s John Riordan School for Professional Development and the University of Shopping Centers.
After Crown American was sold in 2003 I spent a year as a Visiting Professor at Pitt-Greensburg where I taught Public Speaking along with advanced classes in Advertising and Public Relations.
The following year I was lured back into to the private sector at Concurrent Technologies Corporation, a government contractor specializing in various professional services in Johnstown. I began my nine year tenure there in corporate communication but found my role expanded to business development and writing proposals for multi-million dollar federal government contracts. For the past six years I continued to develop government proposals along with corporate communications activities for JWF Defense Systems, a Johnstown-based manufacturer of military vehicles and other build-to-print medal fabrications.
Along the way I continued to teach as an Adjunct Professor, teaching a class every semester at such institutions as St. Francis University, Mount Aloysius, Penn State University, and mostly at Pitt-Johnstown.
