Fall 2017 Closing Information

December Closing and Winter Recess

  • ALL students are required to leave campus within 12 hours following their last final examination. 
  • ALL residence halls will officially close at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2017.  Any unauthorized student found after 9:00pm could be subject to disciplinary/criminal action.
  • The last contracted meal of the Fall term will be the evening meal on Friday, December 15.
  • Students ARE NOT permitted to return to campus prior to 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 7, 2018. 
  • Students with specific University related need (i.e. athletics, academic, University employment) may remain on, or return early to, campus during the recess period if such need has been communicated and approved prior to the start of the break period. 
  • Students are asked to complete an online staying late request which can be found at my.pitt.edu, my resources, housing eservices, housing & dining services after October 31, 2017. The form must be completed NO LATER than Friday, December 8, 2017 to communicate such a need. Students remaining on and/or returning to campus early are asked to be mindful of the fact that ALL University policies remain in effect.
  • If a student is found in any residential facility during the close down period without prior permission, he/she will be IMMEDIATELY removed and disciplinary action WILL be imposed.

What Do I Do?

Staying in the Same Room

Moving to a Different Room

Leaving UPJ/Cancelling Housing

  • Complete Winter Recess check list below.
  • Keep key over break.
  • Sign checkout sheet on your door.

 

  • Receive approval from Housing Office, by Friday, December 8, 2017.
  • Make arrangements to move with current occupant of new room.  All moves MUST be completed prior to leaving for break.
  • Move out of current room.
    • Return room to move-in condition.
    • Checkout and return key with residence staff or complete an express checkout envelope.
  • Move into new assignment.
    • Receive new room key from residence staff.
    • Sign new RCR.
  • Complete Winter Recess Checklist below.
  • Notify Housing by Friday, December 8, 2017, in order to be refunded your initial room deposit.
  • Return room to move-in condition.
  • Checkout and return key with residence staff or complete an express checkout envelope.  A lock core change will be performed for all keys not returned and you will be billed.

Winter Recess Checklist

  • During Winter Recess rooms will be inspected and maintenance and custodial work will be performed.
  • Before leaving for Winter Recess, please attend to the following matters:
    1. Turn down thermostats.  (Do not turn heat off completely.)
    2. Clean out refrigerators of all perishable items.
    3. Excluding refrigerators, unplug ALL electrical items.  This applies to those items located in public areas as well as electrical items in your room. 
    4. Remove ALL plants that you want to survive.
    5. Close and lock ALL windows, bathroom door (if a shared bathroom), and your room door.
    6. Turn off ALL lights.
    7. Complete arrangements with the Office of Student Housing for ALL room changes.  If you have an approved room change for Spring Term, please complete your move BEFORE leaving campus for the semester break and return your keys to your RA.
    8. Whether changing rooms, moving off campus, graduating, or intending not to return for the next semester, you MUST make appropriate arrangements with your RA in order to officially check out of your room.  Failure to do so MAY result in an improper check out charge. 

Valuables

  • Residents should remove all valuable items from their room.  Please remember that students are responsible for the care and safety of their own personal property.  The University WILL NOT be held liable, either directly or indirectly, for loss of or damage to the personal property of individuals.  Large sums of money and valuables SHOULD NOT be kept in residence hall rooms, ESPECIALLY during University recess periods.
  • It is recommended that insurance be carried by EACH student or his/her parent(s) against loss and damage of personal property. 

January Opening

  • Residence halls will open for the Spring term at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 7, 2018.
  • The first contracted meal of the Spring term will be the evening meal on Sunday, January 7, 2018.
  • Classes will begin on Monday, January 8, 2018.
