Graduation Requirements

To be recommended for graduation, a candidate must:

Engineering Technology

  • Complete all required courses with passing grades
  • Earn the total number of required credits
  • Attain a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.0 in:
    • All courses on the student's University of Pittsburgh record
    • The student's major area (CET, CPET,  EET, or MET)
  • Complete the senior year (at least 26 credits) while registered in the Division of Engineering Technology.(Exceptions to the fourth requirement may be granted for a limited number of credits by the student's Department Head.) 
  • Advanced-standing credits count toward graduation requirements but are not included in GPA computation.

Mathematics Grade Requirements

A grade of C- or better is required in Math 0221 and Math 0231 before taking the next course in the sequence. A grade of less than C- requires that the course be repeated.

Academic Discipline

The academic record of each student enrolled in the Engineering Technology Division is reviewed at the conclusion of the Fall and Spring Terms of the academic year. In order to be classified in satisfactory academic standing, an Engineering Technology student with full-time status must:

  • Earn a minimum of 24 credits per academic year (12 credits for the year of admission for students admitted in the Spring Term)
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 after completing 24 credits
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 after completing 54 credits
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in his/her major area (CET, CPET, EET, or MET)

Engineering Technology Division students who fail to achieve the criteria for satisfactory academic standing will be placed on academic probation and are subject to dismissal from the Division.

At the end of the sophomore year, it is necessary for each student to satisfy the requirement of a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, as well as have passing grades in all prior courses before he/she is permitted to continue into junior level courses.

A student's cumulative GPA is determined by dividing the total number of quality points by the total number of credits assigned quality grades.

Only credits and quality points for courses taken at the University of Pittsburgh are used in calculation of the GPA. All courses (with the exception of ET, CET, CPET, EET, and MET Seminars) must be taken for quality grades; H, S, N grades will not be approved for any courses (other than the exceptions noted earlier) that are intended to satisfy graduation requirements of the Engineering Technology Division.

For courses taken since January 2, 1996, the Engineering Technology Division permits a student to repeat courses in which C- or D or F grades were received. These courses should be repeated within one academic year following the original registration. In the student's cumulative GPA, original credits and quality points of these repeated courses will not be included. This is a Pitt-Johnstown policy described in the college bulletin.

Changes in Concentration

A Division of Engineering Technology student whose academic record satisfies the minimum requirements for continued registration may transfer from one Engineering Technology Program (Civil, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical) to another, or change his or her registration status from full-time to part-time or from part-time to full-time. A form, "Change Request for Program, Plan or Advisor," available in the Engineering Technology Office, should be completed to initiate a change of program or change of registration status.

Statute of Limitations

All required academic work for the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology degree, including courses for which the advanced-standing credit has been granted, must be completed within 12 consecutive calendar years. Under unusual circumstances, a student may, with the approval of his/her program head, request a waiver of this policy by writing to the Director of Engineering Technology at Johnstown. In effect, this policy means that part-time students must progress toward the degree at a minimum rate of 12 credits per calendar year.

With the exception of Computer Engineering Technology, other programs are accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org .

Communication Elective in Humanities

One of the courses from the following list is strongly recommended to be taken by Engineering Technology students as one of their electives. This list represents courses that include a strong emphasis on communications to complement the required communication sequence.

  • Foreign Languages:  French, Italian, Spanish; Elementary, Intermediate, and Conversation and Composition Courses.
  • English 080's Courses:  Narrative Literature, Dramatic Literature, Introduction to Poetry.

Speech and Theatre: Public Speaking, Oral Interpretation, Small Group Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Intercultural Communication, Mass Communications, Acting, Directing, Persuasion, Scene Design.
