Dr. Elizabeth A. Harkins is an assistant professor of special education at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Dr. Harkins received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and obtained Master’s degree in Special Education at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. She earned her doctorate from American International College in Springfield, MA.
She has more than 10 years of experience working in the field of special education, as an administrator, program director, teacher of students with moderate to severe disabilities, and parent advocate.
Dr. Harkins has presented nationally about her research interests: self-determination, transition, social and emotional development for students with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders, and parent communication and collaboration.
In addition, she has also worked closely at the local and state levels in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, to improve the quality of life for persons with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders.
