John McGrath has been a member of the Pitt-Johnstown faculty since 1994.
Dr. McGrath's academic and professional background is primarily in the field of marketing communications. As an undergraduate, he completed dual majors in marketing and communications at the University of Notre Dame. He earned a Master’s degree in marketing and real estate development at Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management. He earned a doctorate at Penn State; his doctoral thesis was titled: "Integrated Marketing Communications: An Empirical Test of its Effectiveness."
His professional career began at Leo Burnett/Chicago where he worked on the RCA and Schenley Liquor accounts. At J. Walter Thompson/Chicago, John was promoted to Vice President, and helped manage several major accounts, including Oscar Mayer, Miller Brewing, McDonnell Douglas and Northwestern Mutual Life.
John is an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, where he teaches Principles of Marketing, Marketing Management, Product Management, Distribution Management, Pricing Management, Promotion Management, and Consumer Behavior. In 2008, he received the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award.
Dr. McGrath's research has been presented at a number of major conferences including the American Marketing Association, the International Communication Association, the Marketing Management Association, and the Atlantic Marketing Association. Each year, Dr. McGrath and Ron Vickroy co-author the local Regional Economic Climate Study that is presented at the Annual Economic Summit in Johnstown.
He is involved with helping local government, economic development, and non-profit groups, and in 1998 received the Pitt-Johnstown Community Service Recognition Award for his efforts.
Dr. McGrath has also provided consulting services to a wide range of organizations including The InforMedx Group, Concurrent Technologies Corporation, Pawlowski and Harman Architects, Crown American Corporation, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Johnstown Area Regional Industries, Barnes, Saly & Company, and The Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
He lives in Johnstown with his wife Anne, and two daughters, Maura and Kate.
