Middle Schoolers Add Wins in Regional Math Competition at Pitt-Johnstown

Westmont Hilltop High School MATHCOUNTS® team won the 34th annual Johnstown Regional Competition sponsored by the Johnstown Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers. 

The competition took place February 11, 2017, at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. 

Daniel Kukula of Blairsville Middle School, the overall first-place finisher, won a $500 scholarship from Pitt-Johnstown.

Twelve schools and about 100 students participated in this year’s competition. The winning Westmont Hilltop is coached by Jeffrey Papcun. The four team members are: Kallie Williams, daughter of David and Tammy Williams; Anthony Hassett, son of Peter and Monica Hassett; Maggie Piro, daughter of Shawn and Tracy Piro; and, Lakyn Davis, daughter of Thomas and Hope Davis.

The Individual winners are Daniel Kukula 1st Place / Blairsville Middle School, son of Hank and Amy Marilyn Kukula – Patricia Dodson, Coach; - Connor Wysocki 2nd Place, Forest Hills, son of Ernie and Jill Wysocki – Coach, Dominic Vescovi; Hank Skirboll, 3rd Place / Blairsville Middle School, son of Aaron and Jamie Skirboll - Patricia Dodson, Coach; and, Liam Delaney 4th Place / Richland School District – Amanda Petrosky and Valerie Bailey, Coaches. The team from Westmont and the top four individual winners will advance to the Pennsylvania state competition in Harrisburg, PA on March 10-11. 

The students will compete against the top finalists of the 23 regional competitions that are held in Pennsylvania. Winners of the state competition go on to the national competition in May.

As a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students, MATHCOUNTS® prepares students for future career opportunities and success. More than 7 million students across the U.S. have participated in the MATHCOUNTS® program.
