What is a Transfer Student?
A transfer student is someone who wishes to attend Pitt-Johnstown but is, or has been, enrolled in another institution of higher learning. In order to be considered a transfer applicant, you must meet two criteria. First, you have graduated from high school, or have your GED. Second, you need to have earned 12 or more credits at another college, which generally equates to one semester. If both of those sound like you, read on to learn the specifics of applying to Pitt-Johnstown as a Transfer Student.
What are the Requirements?
As previously mentioned, the first two requirements for transfer applicants are a high school diploma or GED, and 12 or more credits taken at another institution. Once we receive your application, which we'll cover in the next section, we look for one main criteria:
- At least a 2.5 QPA on the college level
An important factor to note about the QPA is that if you attended more than one university, the 2.5 QPA requirement is a combined QPA across all college level work.
What do I need to send with my Application for Admission?
As a transfer student interested in applying for admission to the University of Pittsburgh you must submit the following materials along with your Application for Admission:
- $45.00 application fee
- An official high school transcript
- An official transcript of all college courses taken at other schools, whether or not you wish such courses counted toward a degree at the University
In addition to those materials, you may also send a personal essay or letters of recommendation, though they are not required. We always encourage essays to be sent, as they allow you to highlight leadership, athletic, civic, and other talents that may not be apparent from a simple transcript or score report.
If you are interested in applying, you may do so online by following the helpful link on the right-hand side of this page, or by clicking here.
Is there a Deadline for Application?
Since Pitt-Johnstown practices rolling admission, there is no specific deadline by which applicants must apply. Applicants are considered on a first-come, first-served basis, so early application is always advised. We admit transfer students for all terms (Fall, Spring, and Summer), so you should always be able to find a timeframe to accommodate your needs.
When will I be Notified of any Admissions Decisions?
The rolling nature of our admission makes the entire process run very smoothly, allowing us to make a decision and notify a student typically within a few weeks of us receiving the application, provided it contains of all the required material. If there is any information that we may need from an applicant, they will be notified immediately to ensure a quick turnaround. Additionally, if you find yourself with questions during this time, please feel free to call the Admissions Office at 1-800-765-4875.
Is a Personal Interview Required?
Unless requested by the Admissions Office, a personal interview is not required. We do, however, welcome and encourage campus visits, which are typically followed by a meeting with one of the Admissions staff. These are informal meetings where you are able to ask questions and are very helpful for both prospective students, as well as those already admitted.
Will my College Credits be Accepted by Pitt-Johnstown?
If you are accepted to Pitt-Johnstown, any college credits already earned will be evaluated by the Registrar's Office. A tentative transfer-credit evaluation will be sent to you following your notification of admission. By following the link on the right-hand side of the page, you can get some guideline information about what will transfer from numerous other colleges. While not meant to be used as any sort of definitive guide, it is a useful tool to get a general idea of what will transfer.
