...careers in writing:
  • Writers are compelled by a deep need to express themselves, but very few are able to earn a living soley by selling their creative work.
  • Teaching college, a typical career for writers, requires an MFA or a PhD in creative writing (see above).
  • Our students often combine Writing with another program by either chosing a minor or pursuing a double major. Writing and Education is an excellent choice for the furture high school teacher. Writing and History could be helpful for pursuing Law. Writing and Business is another practical choice. Avid readers and strong communicators often combine Writing with Literature, Communication, or Journalism.
  • Students with Creative or Professional Writing degrees have undertaken successful careers in journalism and feature writing, public relations, web consulting, among others.

  • Backroads, our student run literary magazine, offers a forum for students’ original poetry, fiction, and non-fiction essays. For more information, contact upj_backroads@yahoo.com
  • Wabash Review seeks excellent poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, translations, one-act plays, and graphic art by undergraduates. Prose up to 3,000 words. Send submission with cover letter, brief bio by March 15. Must state current school affiliation.   • The Allegheny Review is one of the oldest and most distinguished literary journals dedicated to undergraduate work. For information, contact review@allegheny.edu
