#5 Wrestlers Battle to 18-18 Tie at #12 Mercyhurst 02/16/07...The #5-ranked Mountain Cat wrestlers were back in action after a 13 day lay-off and came away with an 18-18 tie at #12 Mercyhurst College on Friday. Senior Eli Garshnick (Armagh, Pa.), ranked #7 in the nation, defeated #2-ranked Zack Schafer, 9-6, to help lead Pitt Johnstown. The Mountain Cats are now 19-5-1 on the season. The Mountain Cats jumped out to a 6-0 lead on decision wins by Derrek Bosso (125 lbs.) (Pequea, Pa.) and #7 Brandon Reasy (133 lbs.) (New Enterprise, Pa.), before Mercyhurst's J.J. Zanetta, ranked #7, upset #2-ranked Shane Valko (Windber, Pa.), 3-2. The Lakers took a 12-6 lead when #5 Don Cummings pinned Brian Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa.) at :42 in the 149-lb. bout, and Brian Pogel earned a 7-3 decision over senior National Qulaifier Joe Strittmatter (Ebensburg, Pa.) at 157 lbs. Pitt Johnstown responded by winning the next three matches to regain the lead. All-American Albert Miles (165 lbs.) (Canonsburg, Pa.) scored a 5-4 win over Hudson Harrison, and Garshnick defeated Schafer, 9-6 to even the score. Mike Corcetti (Export, Pa.), undefeated and ranked #1 in the nation, followed with a fall at 1:52 over Gerred Tolson at 184 lbs. to put the Mountain Cats up, 18-12. However, Mercyhurst answered with decision victories at 197 lbs. and heavyweight to force the 18-18 tie. With the tie, Mercyhurst is now 11-6-1. The Mountain Cats wrap up the 2006-07 dual meet schedule at Duquesne University on Saturday against Division I opponents Duquesne and Davidson (NC) College, before traveling to the 2007 East Regional Tournament at UNC-Pembroke on February 23-24.
