Become an Adult Literacy Tutor
Article Body
Did you know that 2.2 million people (44,000 a week) are added to the adult illiterate population each year in the United States?
To help combat this problem, the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Office of Outreach and Professional Services is offering a state-approved literacy training program.
This program, which is free of charge, will give participants the requisite skills and experience to become a literacy tutor. Classes will be held at the UPJ campus on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m., beginning January 23.
The Adult Literacy Training Project is a 65-hour program consisting of two components. Participants will complete 25 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours (service learning component) of experiential, hands-on learning in the area of literacy. These components will run concurrently throughout the 10 weeks of instruction. Those completing the program will earn up to 2.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or 25 professional education contact hours.
The comprehensive program will address the definitions of literacy, adult learning theory, instructional methods, goal setting, learner assessment, welfare reform as it relates to literacy and self-sufficiency, workforce and workplace literacy issues, literacy and technology, and program evaluation.
The service learning component is designed to address the participant’s specific area (s) of interest relating to literacy. With the guidance of the program advisor, the participant can provide tutoring to a group or individual, develop a literacy program, prepare a promotional campaign for a literacy program or agency, conduct an assessment of literacy needs, or work in a social service agency.
Persons interested in the program must complete an application form and write a personal essay. This program is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
For additional information or an application, please contact The Outreach Office at 814-269-2099, or visit
