University Hearing Board

UNIVERSITY HEARING BOARD MISSION STATEMENT

The Pitt-Johnstown University Hearing Board maintains the Student Code of Conduct, upholds meaningful consequences to actions, and strives for fairness, through serving the student body. Our goal is to educate individual students to prevent future offenses and to make students knowledgeable about University Policy.

OVERVIEW

The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown University Hearing Board is the duly authorized hearing body which has jurisdiction over undergraduate students for matters arising from the Student Code of Conduct and Terms and Conditions of Residence and Dining at Pitt-Johnstown. In all cases, the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown University Hearing Board shall possess the authority to recommend and impose both residence hall and University-wide sanctions. The University Hearing Board shall conduct hearings, make findings of facts, recommend and impose disciplinary sanctions where appropriate, and provide due process for students while protecting the rights of all members of the University community.

UNIVERSITY HEARING BOARD STRUCTURE

1. During the Fall & Spring terms, the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown University Hearing Board shall be a standing body of at least 12 members.

2. The term of University Hearing Board members shall begin in August and continue for Fall and Spring terms only.

APPOINTMENT TO THE UNIVERSITY HEARING BOARD

Applications shall be solicited in thef spring tefrm by the Director of Student Relations and Conduct which shall be representative of the University community.  Applications are available online at the Pitt-Johnstown website and in G-61 Student Union.  Students shall meet the following requirements:

  1. Must be registered as a full-time student.
  2. Must be a second term first year student, or sophomore, junior or senior.
  3. Must be in good academic standing.
  4. Must not be on academic or disciplinary sanctions.
  5. Must not be on residence hall suspension or dismissal.

Applicants shall be interviewed by the Director of Student Relations and Conduct and appointments shall be made by the Vice President for Student Affairs based upon the recommendations of the Director of Student Relations and Conduct. 

REMOVAL OF A UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH AT JOHNSTOWN UNIVERSITY HEARING BOARD

A member of the Univerisyt Hearing Board shall be removed automatically for the following:

  1. Academic probation
  2. Disciplinary probation
  3. Residence Hall Suspension
  4. Residence Hall Dismissal
  5. Failure to uphold the confidentiality aspects of the University Hearing Board

A member may be removed by a majority vote of the University Hearing Board membership for failure to discharge the responsibilities of his/ her position. Such charges shall be heard at a meeting of the full membership and a member so charged may be removed by a majority vote of the campus University Hearing Board membership.

UNIVERSITY BOARD HEARINGS AND HEARING OFFICER HEARINGS

A mattefr submitted for adjudication shall be heard by a Hearing Board of three (3) members during the Fall/ Spring Term or a Hearing Officer to be appointed by the Director or designee. During the Summer Term all cases will be heard by a Hearing Officer. In the absence of the availability of a University Hearing Board, the Director or designee may appoint a Hearing Officer who shall reccomend a decision to the Vice President for Student Affairs.
