Pitt-Johnstown's College for Kids Celebrates 25 Years With New Exciting Programs
Article Body
Registrations are now being accepted for the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown’s special 25
th
Anniversary Learning, Enrichment and Recreation Network (LEARN) Program, the longest running premiere day camp learning experience in the area for students.
Conveniently scheduled for mid-summer, students “yearn to LEARN,” beginning Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 14, on the UPJ campus, the special program is open to children who will be entering grades three through eight in the fall.
Each day includes action-packed and fun-filled informative courses, lunch and exciting activities. Through problem-solving and team collaboration, students will explore five different areas of engineering in “Design It! The World of Engineering.” In “Flashback: The 1980s,” youth will learn about the decade when LEARN began, time before computers, cell phones and
American Idol
. Unleashing artistic creativity, the wacky classes in the “Art Fun Shop” class will involve students in designing comic strips and outrageous greeting cards. Students become junior computer scientists in “Cool Computer Science” as they create funky newsletters and web pages; cool cards, banners, and flyers; and amazing school projects using Microsoft Publisher. And, in “The Moon, the Stars and Beyond” students will learn what a head of cabbage and the planet Jupiter have in common as well as how humans live and survive in space as they use information from NASA and a variety of experiments and activities to answer these questions and more.
As part of the 25
th
anniversary celebration a number of special surprise activities are planned throughout the week.
LEARN introduces young people to the physical and social sciences, arts and humanities, current events and technology. Valuable teambuilding skills are formed and new friendships are developed with others throughout the region. All LEARN activities take place on the UPJ campus, featuring state-of-the-art computer laboratories with high-speed internet connections, high-tech science labs, and lush natural setting.
The LEARN Program is presented by the UPJ Outreach and Professional Services Office. The Pitt PowerPrice is $129 and includes daily lunch, all activities, supplies, souvenir t-shirt, and graduation ceremony. The Pitt PowerPrice deadline is noon, Friday, June 9. The price after June 9 will be $169. To register, call the Outreach Office at 814-269-2099.
The Office of Outreach and Professional Services at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown delivers quality educational programs and services to our region. Through a strong commitment to developing community partnerships to meet educational needs, the office offers enrichment programs for adults as well as a variety of educational opportunities for children. Operating within the Outreach Office is the John P. and Joyce Murtha Center for Continuing Education and Professional Development, which offers graduate-level study and professional development programs.
