The Sound of Music captured the hearts of millions when the film debuted in 1965. Now, nearly 40 years later, the von Trapp’s family legacy is born anew as the grandchildren of the REAL Sound of Music family perform the von Trapp Children concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 6, on the Mainstage of the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center on the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown campus.
Their story is timeless. A family determined, against awesome odds to take a stand against the oppression of Nazi Germany, then forced to flee and start over, penniless, in a new land, sings their way to a new life and never gives up hope.
The von Trapp children: Sofia (16), Melanie (14), Amanda (13), and Justin (10) are the great-grandchildren of Captain von Trapp, the father of the famous singing family whose story captivated the world. The children have continued the tradition of the family’s exceptional musical gift and love of singing, sharing songs and heart-warming family stories of life before and after coming to America.
The von Trapp Children perform a variety of folk and classical songs from various European and American traditions, as well as timeless pieces from The Sound of Music. The children’s effervescent voices mesh together the way only a family’s can, and musicians and audiences of all ages recognize the children’s beautiful harmonic blend and pristine tone. As a result, they are increasingly in demand as symphony and pops orchestra guest artists.
The children started out playing small venues. Now they perform to sell out crowds which have carried them into some of the world’s most prestigious theaters, including a date at the Sydney Opera House on a world tour that took them to Australia, New Zealand and Korea. The children have performed across the country for a variety of media, including appearances on Good Morning America, The Grand Ole Opry, Good Day New York, QVC Network and numerous top 20 market television morning and news shows.
The von Trapp Children have recorded three albums: The von Trapp Children, vol. 1, Christmas with The von Trapp Children, and The von Trapp Children, vol. 2.
