Lady Cats Dominate U.D.C., 83-59, on Senior Night
03/01/06..All three Lady Cats seniors made major contributions as Samantha Conner (Everett, Pa.) scored 16 points, Shannon Reigh (Williamsburg, Pa.) tied a career-high with 12 points and Jaclyn Schirf (Loretto, Pa.) dished out a career-high 10 assists in Wednesday's, 83-59, Senior Night victory over the University of District of Columbia in the Sports Center. The Lady Cats, ranked 10th in the East Region, finished the regular season with a 20-7 overall record.
This group of seniors has led the Lady Cats to an impressive 84-26 (.764) overall record and a pair of NCAA Division II National Tournament appearances. Pitt Johnstown has won at least 20 games in each of the last four seasons while Conner, Schirf and Reigh have been members of the Lady Cat Program.
Along with the terrific play from the seniors, red-shirt junior guard Allison Krischer (Johnstown, Pa.) led all scorers with 17 points and seven rebounds. Conner finished 8-15 from the field with six rebounds, while red-shirt freshman guard Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa.) tallied 16 points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Coach Gault also got 13 points on 6-8 shooting from the field and seven rebounds from junior forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Reigh tied her career-high in scoring on 5-7 shooting from the field and 2-2 from the free-throw line, while Schirf broke her previous career-high of nine assists set on December 7 against Clarion.
Conner wrapped up the regular season ranked 18th on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,183 points, just two points shy of Carrie Thomas (1995-1999) for 17th place. Conner is also ranked 20th on the All-Time Rebounding List with 523 rebounds, nine away from LuAnn Ketter (1980-1984) for 19th place. Zapf is also climbing the rebounding list. With her seven rebounds against the Firebirds, Zapf moved into 15th place on the rebounding list with 610 career rebounds. With one rebound, she will tie Justine George (1993-1997) for 14th place.
Pitt Johnstown jumped out to a 21-4 lead seven minutes into the game, before taking a 46-26 halftime lead. The Lady Cats increased the lead to 33 points with 7:05 to play, before going on to the 24-point victory.
The Lady Cats shot 54.8% (34-62) from the field and 31.3% (5-16) from three-point range, while holding the Firebirds to just 22-55 (40.0%) from the field and 3-12 (25.0%) from behind the three-point line. Pitt Johnstown also hit 10 of its 13 free-throws. U.D.C. was 12-18 from the free-throw line.
Robin Williams and Jennifer Jones each scored 13 points, while Deidra Bumbrey and Eniolo Bakare scored nine points apiece for U.D.C. Bakare also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for the Firebirds, now 11-22 on the season.
