Lady Cats Win Fifth Straight With 74-65 Victory at West Virginia State

Lady Cat basketball team made it five straight wins and improved to 16-6 on the season with a 74-65 victory at West Virginia State University, Monday evening.  Senior center Samantha Conner (Everett, Pa.) poured in a game-high 24 points on 10-11 shooting from the field and grabbed six rebounds to lead Pitt Johnstown.
     Conner, who was also 4-6 from the free-throw line, blocked three shots, dished out a pair of assists and made one steal.  With her six rebounds, Conner eclipsed the 500-rebound plateau and moved into 21st place on the Lady Cat All-Time Rebounding List with 502 career rebounds.  Red-shirt freshman guard Crystal Andrews (Johnsotwn, Pa.) added 18 points, a game-high seven assists and three steals, while junior forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.  Zapf now stands 16th on the all-time rebounding list with 566 rebounds.  Coach Gault also got five points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals from senior guard Jaclyn Schirf (Loretto, Pa.) in the victory.
     The Lady Cats built a 43-35 halftime lead, but West Virginia State stormed back to take a 62-60 lead with 5:26 to play in the game.  However, Pitt Johnstown went on a 14-3 run to close out the game and secure the win.  The Lady Cats shot an very impressive 53.3% (32-60) from the field, while holding the Yellow Jackets to just 33.3% (21-63) shooting.  West Virginia State also made seven three-pointers, connected on 16 of its 19 (84.2%) free-throws and out-rebounded Pitt Johnstown, 40-37, but the Lady Cats' overall solid shooting and good defense carried them to the victory.
     Mallory Grogg's 18 points, including 12-13 from the free-throw line, and 10 rebounds led the way for West Virginia State.  April Stevenson and Lasha Anderson each chipped in 16 points for the Yellow Jackets, now 12-9 on the year.
     The Lady Cats travel to South Carolina on Saturday and Sunday to take on Anderson College and Converse College.  Pitt Johnstown will play its next home game on Monday, February 20 when Shepherd (WV) University visits the Sports Center at 7:00 p.m.
