Mountain Cats Earn 77-56 Win at Columbia Union
02/01/06...Head Coach Bob Rukavina's Mountain Cats rebounded from Saturday's loss at IUP with a 77-56 victory at Columbia Union (MD) College Wednesday night. Sophomore forward Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead three Mountain Cats who scored in double figures. With the win, Pitt Johnstown swept the season series against the Pioneers and improved to 15-4 on the season.
Gilliam, the nation's leader in field goal percentage, finished 6-7 from the field and 6-7 from the free-throw line, while junior guard J.J. Schumacher (Castle Shannon, Pa.) added 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Red-shirt freshman forward Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 points on 5-7 shooting from the field and 1-2 from the free-throw line. Coach Rukavina also got eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks from red-shirt freshman forward Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa.), nine points and four rebounds from senior guard Steve Scorpion (Murrysville, Pa.) and seven points, four rebounds and a game-high five assists from senior guard Joey Tutchstone (Vandergrift, Pa.).
The Mountain Cats jumped on Columbia Union for a 32-13 halftime lead, before going on the the 21-point win. Pitt Johnstown continued its good shooting and solid defense by making 26 of their 51 (51.0%) shots from the field, while holding the Pioneers to just 32.8% (21-64) shooting. The Mountain Cats, who held a 45-30 advantage on the glass, also made 20 of their 27 free-throws.
Darren Travis led Columbia Union with 16 points. Glenroy Palmer chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds and Bruce Edwards collected 10 points for the Pioneers, now 4-15 on the year.
Pitt Johnstown returns home to host West Chester University on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Center, before traveling to Mansfield University on Monday.
