Lady Cats Celebrate Alumni Day With, 72-58, Win Over East Region #3 IUP
01/28/06...Saturday's Pitt Johnstown Lady Cat Basketball Alumni Day turned out to be a good one, as junior forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa) scored 21of her game-high 25 points in the second half to lead Head Coach Jodi Gault's East Region #10-ranked Lady Cats to a 72-58 victory over East Region #3 Indiana University (PA). Zapf's 25 points led three Lady Cats who finished in double figures. Pitt Johnstown is now 13-6 on the year.
Zapf, who finished 10-13 shooting from the field and 5-7 from the free throw line, also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked a shot. Red-shirt freshmen guard Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa) tallied 19 points, six rebounds, three assists and a game-high five steals, while junior guard Allison Krischer (Johnstown, Pa) rounded out the double figure scorers with ten points. Krischer added eight rebounds, three assists and four steals. Senior center Samantha Conner (Everett, Pa) scored seven points and jumped from 24th to 22nd place on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,050 career points. Conner is now just one point shy of Crystal Barr (2000-04) for 21st on the scoring list.
Pitt Johnstown took a slim 31-29 halftime lead, but came out firing to start the second half and went on a 13-2 run. The Lady Cats never lost the lead again on their way to the 14-point victory. After shooting 37.0% in the first half, the Lady Cats improved by shooting 51.9% in the second half. Pitt Johnstown's defense held IUP to just 27.0% shooting in the second half.
The Lady Cats finished the game shooting 24-54 (44.4%) from the field, 4-10 (40.0%) from behind the three-point line and 20-29 (69.0%) from the free-throw line. Pitt Johnstown also forced 21 turnovers, including 18 steals. The Indians shot just 31.1% (23-74) from the field, 20.0% (4-20) from three-point range and 61.5% (8-13) from the free-throw line.
Mame Brumbaugh's 12 points led the way for IUP, while Jahzinga Tracey added 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Indians, now 13-6 on the year.
The Lady Cats host Cheyney University on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in the Sports Center, before beginning a stretch of five straight raod games at Columbia Union (MD) on Saturday, February 4.
