Samantha Conner Eclipses 1,000-Point Plateau
   01/16/06...Samantha Conner (Everett, Pa.)
scored a team-high 17 points and became the 28th Lady Cat to reach the 1,000-point plateau, but it wasn't enough, as Glenville State (WV) College, the #6-ranked team in NCAA Division II, dealt Head Coach Jodi Gault's Pitt Johnstown team a 72-52 loss Monday night in the Sports Center.  The Lady Cats are now 11-5.
Conner, who needed three points coming into the game to reach the mark, pulled within one point on a lay-up with 9:18 to play in the first half, before connecting on another lay-up at 8:40 to join the 1,000-point scorers club.  Along with her 17 points on 8-22 shooting and one three-point field goal, Conner grabbed nine rebounds (6 offensive rebounds) and made three steals.  Conner now ranks 27th on the  Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,014 points and is tied for 24th place with Sue Rosso (1991-1995) on the All-Time Rebounding List.
Red-shirt freshman guard Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa.) finished with eight points, while junior guard Allison Krischer (Johnstown, Pa.) and junior forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added seven points apiece.  Zapf also pulled down nine rebounds to tie Conner for team-high.  With her nine rebounds, Zapf is three rebounds shy of tying LuAnn Ketter (1980-1984) for 18th on the All-Time Rebounding List.
After trailing 30-27 at halftime, Pitt Johnstown came out and grabbed the lead, 31-30, with 19:19 to play in the game.  Both teams battled back and forth, until Glenville State broke a 42-42 tie with 8:34 remaining on Mallory Menendez's three-pointer.  The Lady Pioneers went on an 18-2 run that featured 5-5 shooting from three-point range over the next four minutes to put the game away.
The Lady Cats were unable to overcome 28.8% (19-66) shooting from the field and 57.9% (11-19) from the free-throw line.  Glenville State ended 27-62 (43.5%) from the field and 9-15 (60.0%) from the free-throw line.  The Lady Pioneers were also 9-25 from behind the three-point line, while the Lady Cats made just three of their nine three-point attempts.
Denae Dobbins, who came within one blocked shot of a triple double, led Glenville State with 21 points, 21 rebounds and nine blocks.  Rachel Redick chipped in 13 points, and Christy Alltop and Casey Taylor each had 12 points for the Lady Pioneers, now 13-0 on the year.
The Lady Cats travel to West Liberty State (WV) College on Sunday and to California University (PA) on Wednesday, January 25, before returning home to host Indiana University (PA) for Alumni Day on Saturday, January 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
