Lady Cats Make it Nine Straight Wins With a 57-48 Win At Millersville
01/04/06...Head Coach Jodi Gault's Lady Cats erased a nine-point halftime deficit by shooting 33-38 from the free-throw for the game to earn a 57-48 win at Millersville University on Wednesday. Pitt Johnstown, winners of nine straight games, was led by junior forward Jessica Zapf's (North Hills, Pa) game-highs of 19 points, including 17-18 from the free-throw line and 16 rebounds. With the victory, the Lady Cats are now 10-2 on the year.
Zapf, whose 17 made free-throws for the game was one shy of school record matched on two occasions, was also a perfect 14-14 in the second half. Senior forward Samantha Conner (Everett, Pa) added 13 points and nine rebounds. Conner was also 7-8 from the free-throw line, while red-shirt freshmen guard Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa) tallied nine points four rebounds and two assists for the Lady Cats. Junior guard Allison Krishcer (Johnstown, Pa) finished the night with eight points, five rebounds and a game-high five steals.
Zapf, who now has 488 career rebounds, jumped ahead of Janet Kartovicky (1983-1987) and moved into 22nd place on the Lady Cat All-Time Rebounding List. Zapf is now one rebound away from tying Melissa Park (1999-2002) for 21st on the list. Conner, is now 26th on the rebounding list with 448 career rebounds, three shy of Toddy Croyle (1988-1992) for 25th place.
After trailing 28-19 at halftime, the Lady Cats turned up the defense and held Millersville to just 24.1% (7-29) shooting from the field. Although Pitt Johnstown shot just 30.0% (12-40) from the field, the Lady Cats got the job done from the free-throw line, including connecting on 24-26 (92.3%) in the second half. Millersville took a 6-4 lead 5:19 into the game and did not lose that lead until Zapf made a pair of free-throws with 5:51 left to play, propelling the Lady Cats to the nine point victory.
Millersville, who fell to 5-6 on the year, got 11 points from Branden Lippy. Jamika Rehm and Natasha Howard pulled down seven and six rebounds, respectively in the losing cause.
The Lady Cats return home on Saturday to host a doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against Coumbia Union (MD) College. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 6:30 p.m in the Sports Center, followed by the Mountain Cats at 8:00 p.m.
