Men's Basketball Wins Title at East Stroudsburg Tournament with 70-64 Victory Over Hosts
12/10/05...Head Coach Bob Rukavina and the Mountain Cats broke open a 33-33 halftime tie and claimed the championship at the 2005 East Stroudsburg Panaia-Soloway Pocono Rotary Classic on Saturday with a 70-64 victory over the host school. Sophomore forward Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Pitt Johnstown to its eighth straight win. The Mountain Cats ended the first semester with an 8-2 overall record.
Gilliam, who finished the game 6-11 from the field and 6-9 from the free-throw line, led three Mountain Cats who scored in double figures. Senior guard Joey Tutchstone (Vandergrift, Pa.) scored 13 points, and red-shirt freshman forward Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tallied 14 points and four rebounds off of Coach Rukavina's bench. Senior guard Nick Mezyk (Johnstown, Pa.) added nine points on 3-5 shooting from three-point range, while red-shirt freshman forward Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) chipped in six points and six rebounds in the victory.
The Mountain Cats continued their good shooting and solid defense. Pitt Johnstown shot 48.1% (26-54) from the field and 38.5% (5-13) from behind the three-point line, while holding East Stroudsburg to just 38.7% (24-62) shooting for the game. Pitt Johnstown also hit 13 of its 22 free-throws. East Stroudsburg was just 7-13 from the free-throw line.
Darron Bradley's 13 points and eight rebounds paced East Stroudsburg. Danny Hargrove had 11 points and seven rebounds, and Murvin English tallied 10 points in a losing cause. With the loss, East Stroudsburg fell to 5-3 on the season.
Pitt Johnstown will break for Finals and the Holiday Season, before tipping-off the second semester at home against West Virginia Wesleyan on January 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
