University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown
vs. Clarion University - 12/07/05
Lady Cat Basketball Earns, 78-71, Home Victory over Clarion
12/07/05... Head Coach Jodi Gault's Lady Cat basketball team extended its winning streak to five games and avenged a loss to Clarion University earlier this season with a, 78-71, victory over the Golden Eagles Wednesday night in the Sports Center. Junior guard Allison Krishcer (Johnstown, Pa.) poured in a game-high 21 points, and senior center Samantha Conner (Everett, Pa.) added 19 points and a game-high nine rebounds to help the Lady Cats improve 6-2 on the season.
Krischer's 21 points came on 7-14 shooting from the field with two three pointers and 5-6 from the free-throw line. Along with Conner's 19 points, junior forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tallied 17 points on 6-8 shooting from the field and 5-7 from the free-throw line. Zapf also had six rebounds to move her into 25th place on the All-Time Lady Cat Rebounding List with 448 career rebounds. Zapf is now three rebounds shy of Toddy Croyle (1988-1992) for 24th place on the rebounding list. Red-shirt freshman Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa.) finished with 12 points and three blocks, while senior guard Jacilyn Schirf (Loretto, Pa.) scored five points, chipped in a team-high nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds for the Lady Cats.
The Golden Eagles took the opening tip-off in for a lay-up, but never held the lead again for the remainder of the game. Pitt Johnstown grabbed a 42-34 halftime lead, before increasing its lead to 14 points with 14:07 left in the game. Clarion cut the deficit to two points four separate times, but the Lady Cats' defense and free-thorw shooting were too much for the Golden Eagles, as Pitt-Johnstown held on for the seven-point win.
The Lady Cats were 29-62 (46.8%) from the field, 4-9 (44.4%) from three point range and 76.2% (16-21) from the free-throw line. Clarion finished 46.6% (27-58) from the field, 23.5% (4-17) from three-point range and 81.3% (13-16) from the free throw line.
Clarion was led by April Gratton's 19 points and eight rebounds. Melba Melton (15 points) and Ashley Grimm (12 points) also scored in double figures for the Golden Eagles, who fell to 4-4 on the season.
Pitt Johnstown travels to Slippery Rock University on Friday, before breaking for Finals the holidays. The Lady Cats will then host the Mountain Cat Tournament on December 29 and 30 in the Sports Center. Pitt Johnstown will take on Bloomsburg University on December 29 at 8:00 p.m. after Ashland (OH) University and Philadelphia University battle at 6:00 p.m. The consolation and championship games are scheduled for December 30 at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
