Chris Gilliam and Jessica Zapf Named Independent Basketball Players of the Week

Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD/Lansdowne H.S.)
and junior forward
Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa./ North Hills H.S.)
have been named NCAA Division II Independent Collegiate Athletic Association (ICAA) Men’s and Women’s Basketball Players of the Week for the week ending Dec. 4.
Gilliam
, a 6’7” 215-lb. forward, averaged 28.5 points and eight rebounds per game in a 95-70 home victory over Bloomsburg University on Wednesday and a 92-71 at Glenville State (WV) University on Saturday.
Gilliam
also shot 84% (21-25) from the field and 78.9% (15-19) from the free-throw line. He scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against Bloomsburg, before scoring a career-high 31 points at Glenville State. Through seven games,
Gilliam
leads all of the Independent schools in scoring (24.1 ppg.) and field goal percentage (.736). He is also second in rebounding (8.3 rpg.) and fifth in steals (1.7 spg.).
Zapf,
a 5’11” forward, averaged 17 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 55% (11-20) from the field and 70.6% (12-17) from the free-throw line to help lead the Lady Cats to a pair of victories.

tallied 22 points and 11 rebounds in a 74-59 win at Shippensburg on Wednesday and 12 points and eight rebounds in a 76-47 home victory over Salem International (WV) University on Sunday. Through seven games,

and Grand Canyon (AZ) University’s Brandi Steinke lead the Independents in scoring at 15.4 points per game.
Zapf
is also second in rebounding (9.7 rpg.), sixth in field goal percentage (54.7%) and eighth in free-throw percentage.
Along with Pitt Johnstown, Columbia Union (MD) College, Florida Gulf Coast University, Grand Canyon (AZ) University, Palm Beach Atlantic (FL) University, Tiffin (OH) University and Upper Iowa University comprise the NCAA Division II Independent basketball schools.
