To connect to ResNet, your computer must pass a pre-registration scanning process called CAT (Client AssessmentTool). This scan will check your Windows-based PC or Apple MAC OS X computer for current and up to date anti-virus software and operating system updates and patches. Linux-based computers are not currently subject to this scan, but should be checked for updates on a regular basis to protect against new-found vulnerabilities. (It can and does happen!) This scanning tool, CAT, will help to reduce the number of virus and spyware infected machines on ResNet, and help us to provide you a better quality ResNet experience for a greater number of users.1. Configure your computer to obtain its IP address automatically via DHCP.
2. Install the newest Antivirus program. You should have a copy of the latest Student Toolkit (PittNet Complete) in your check-in packet. (If your copy is missing or damaged, contact the Student Help Desk, ext 7548, or come to 228 Blackington Hall to get a copy.) This CD contains a new anti-virus program, Symantec EndPoint Protection and other useful utilities. Before running the CAT scan, insert the Toolkit CD and when the welcome screen pops up, click agree, next, and then Connect. Follow the instructions on the succeeding screens to install Symantec Endpoint. Be sure your PC is connected to the network so that the AV program can update itself before you proceed to the next step. If you do run into any problems installing this program or updating it, please disconnect your PC from the network and contact the Student Help Desk at ext. 7548. Once complete, proceed to the next step. (Mac users: There is a version of this AV program on the CD for you too. Pop in the CD and locate the Antivirus folder and install Symantec AV. You may think antivirus software isn’t necessary on a Mac, but it is!) 3. Correctly name your computer and put it into the proper workgroup. Your computer name is your Pitt account name and your workgroup is UPJRESNET. (Again, detailed instructions for these steps are listed on the following pages.) Failure to properly name your computer and/or place it into the proper workgroup could cause your connection to be turned off. Only your Pitt account name and UPJRESNET are acceptable names for this step.4. If not already connected, connect your computer’s network connection to the wall jack in your room and then open up a web browser, Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari, Mozilla, etc. You should be automatically directed to the CAT page. You will first be directed to scan your PC using the CAT tool. (If your browser does not go directly to the scan page, try entering a different web address. www.aol.com usually works or http://130.49.112.2.) You may get a message in your browser about an expired certificate. If you do, it is safe to accept it and continue. The CAT scan will take a few minutes to complete. If your PC does not pass this scan, you will be shown the vulnerabilities that need to be fixed and will be given links to websites that will allow you to download the necessary patches and updates. Once your PC has passed the CAT scan, you will be automatically be redirected to the Pitt-Johnstown ResNet Registration page. At that page, read the Acceptable Usage Policy, scroll down, enter your Pitt account name and password and click on the Accept button. You may wish to print out this page for future reference regarding the AUP. 5. You should now receive a page showing that you have successfully registered your computer and that you now need to reboot it. You may need to wait a few minutes for the servers to process your registration. Once you have done so, you are done and should now have full Internet access. If not, recheck that you have followed each step and have properly set up your PC and try to register again. If you still have problems, contact the Student Help Desk at ext. 7548 and ask for assistance. 6. Note about Gaming Consoles: Should you wish to use a gaming console, such as a Sony Playstation, Microsoft X-Box, etc, it will be necessary for you to stop at the Student Help Desk in 228 Blackington Hall and pick up a registration request form. These types of devices must be manually registered and can take 3-5 days to process before obtaining network access.Additionally, other network devices such as routers, wireless access points/routers, switches, servers, etc, are not permitted to be used on ResNet and will be a reason to terminate your connection.
