Dr. Shawn Brooks has been named Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Dr. Brooks was selected following a national search and will assume his duties April 1.
In announcing Dr. Brooks’ appointment, Pitt-Johnstown President Dr. Jem Spectar offered, “Our campus community is fortunate to have someone with Dr. Brooks’ impressive record of accomplishment joining our leadership team. With a clear passion for working with students, Dr. Brooks is a forward-thinking administrator and an enthusiastic leader who can implement the vision of the institution through effective planning, program development, and assessment. He brings an impressive record of fostering and achieving student life outcomes including retention, student satisfaction, and campus and civic engagement. With a demonstrated understanding of best practices in contemporary student affairs administration, Dr. Brooks has a strong record of incorporating leading-edge trends to improve student outcomes and experiences.”
Dr. Brooks received his BA from Thiel College and an MA in student personnel services from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He also received an MA and PhD in higher education and organizational change from the University of California – Los Angeles and is a graduate of Harvard University’s Management and Leadership in Education Institute. He comes to Pitt-Johnstown from the University of Pittsburgh where he has served as the Associate Dean of Students since 2008. His career has also included positions at St. Lawrence University, UCLA, and Georgia Institute of Technology. He has presented extensively around the country on topics including multiculturalism, leadership, student development, and wellness. He is a member of the American College Personnel Association, Association of College and University Housing Officers, and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.
Campus constituents who met Dr. Brooks during his visit to campus remarked, “Shawn’s passion for student development was quite apparent,” and “He is a proven leader with great vision.”
As a member of the campus’ executive leadership team, Dr. Brooks will administer, monitor, and evaluate Student Affairs programs, formulate and implement student policies, develop innovative strategies for providing student services, and promote student engagement through opportunities including the RealWorld Action Program.
