Fratz First-Team All-WVIAC, Harper Freshman of the Year - 02/24/13


Kaitlynn Fratz Garners First-Team All-Conference Honors;
Jasmine Harper Named WVIAC Freshman of the Year;
     02/24/13...Lady Cat center Jasmine Harper (Cleveland Heights, Pa.) was named the WVIAC's Freshman of the Year, while last year's Freshman of the Year Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, MD) earned a spot on the WVIAC Women's Basketball All-Conference First-Team when this year's accolades were released on Sunday.  Voting was done by the league's 15 women's basketball coaches...      West Liberty (WV) Univesity's senior guard Hillary Southworth was tabbed the WVIAC’s Player of the Year, as voted on by the league coaches. and Glenville State (WV) College's Bunky Harkleroad earned  Coach of the Year honors.
     Harper helped the Lady Cats into the upper echelon of the WVIAC with her solid campaign. She led the team in offensive rebounds (72), was second in field goal percentage (48.3 percent) and rebounds per outing (6.6) and was third in scoring (8.5).  Harper finished fifth in the league standings for offensive rebounds per game (3.13), 10th for field goal percentage and in 16th in rebounds per game. It marks the second straight season that UPJ has had the Freshman of the Year as Kaitlynn Fratz picked up the honor a season ago.
     Fratz was named a First-Team All-WVIAC performer for the second straight season after leading the Lady Cats in scoring (18.4 ppg.), Assists (103), steals (46), field goals-made (127), 3-point field goals (41), and free-throw made and attempted (127-163).  Nationally, Fratz ranks 26th in the country in points per game and 66th in assists per game.
     Southworth, a native of Twinsburg, Ohio, led the Hilltoppers to a second-place finish in the conference standings with  19-7 overall mark and a 17-5 record against league competition.  She garnered four WVIAC Player of the Week accolades on the year. Southworth led the WVIAC with her scoring average of 24.2, which is the second-best mark in Division II this season.  In the WVIAC, Southworth finished fifth in minutes played per game (35), sixth in three-point field goals made per game (2.12), seventh in free throw percentage (79.9 percent), eighth in steals per game (1.96) and 12th in three-point field goal percentage (37.7 percent).
     Harkleroad guided Glenville State to the WVIAC regular-season championship after registering a 26-2 overall mark, including a 21-1 record against league competition.  The award is the first for Harkleroad and marks the fifth time that a coach from Glenville State has won the award.  He currently has the Pioneers at No. 12 in the latest national rankings and No. 3 in the Atlantic Region.
