Mountain Cat Baseball Takes Two From Clarion
02/25/13... (Game 1) (Game 2) The Mountain Cat baseball team used an 11-run fifth inning to break open a scoreless tie in an 11-0 win in Monday doubleheader opener against Clarion University at Point Stadium, before completing the sweep with a 12-6 win in game two.
In game one, the Mountain Cats scored 11 runs on nine hits in the fifth inning, highlighted by two Jeff Campbell (Brackenridge, Pa.) run-producing triples, to break open a scoreless game.
Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.) went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored, while Mike Palkovitz (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) was 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs. Jake Warner (Dillsburg, Pa.) had a base and two RBI.
Derek Younker (Big Cover Tannery, Pa.) got the start and evened his record at 1-1 after scattering four hits in four scoreless innings. Younker also fanned three.
In the nightcap, Pitt-Johnstown fell behind 3-0 after a half of an inning but scored seven runs over the fifth and sixth innings to build 12-4 lead en route to the 12-6 win.
Warner had three hits, including two doubles, three RBI, and three runs, and Palkovitz had three hits and two RBI. Morrow singled, doubled and drove in two, while Matt McMillen (Johnstown, Pa.) belted a solo homer, and Ryan Matsko (Latrobe, Pa.) had an inside-the-park homerun.
John Fees (Carrolltown, Pa.) improved to 1-0 after allowing three runs on four hits in four innings. Fees also struckout six and walked two.
The Mountain Cats will host a WVIAC doubleheader against Bluefield State (WV) College on March 6 at 1 p.m. at Johnstown's Point Stadium, before traveling to Fort Pierce, Fla. for their Spring Trip from March 8-14.
