Baseball Opens With Split at West Va. State

(Game 1) (Game 2) Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.) homered and Jeff Campbell (Brackenridge, Pa.) drove in three runs in the Mountain Cats' 12-8 come-from-behind win in Monday's season opening doubleheader at West Virginia State University. The Yellow Jackets earned a 7-4 win in the nightcap to secure the split.
In game one, Pitt-Johnstown used an eight-run fifth inning to erase an 8-3 deficit on its way to the 12-8 win. Morrow belted a homerun and drove in three, while Campbell added two hits, including a double and three RBI. Drew Ebersole (Martinsburg, Pa.) had two hits and two RBI,and Ryan Matsko (Latrobe, Pa.) and Nate Pope (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) each collected two hits.
Kody Reighard (Salix, Pa.) picked-up the win after allowing three unearned runs in two innings of work in relief of starter John Fees (Carrolltown, Pa.). Rylan Schnably (Bedford, Pa.) struck ot three and didn't allow a hit over the final two innings.
In game two, the Yellow Jackets turned the tables on Pitt-Johnstown and came back from a 4-0 first inning deficit for a 7-4 victory.
Zach Vignero (Johnstown, Pa.) and Pope had two hits and two RBI apiece, and Jake Warner (Dillsburg, Pa.) and Morrow both added two hits.
Derek Younker (Big Cove Tannery, Pa.) took the loss for the Mountain Cats after surrendering six earned runs on nine hits over the first four innings.
The Mountain Cats will host a non-conference doubleheader against Clarion University on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a WVIAC doubleheader agaist Bluefield State (WV) College on March 6 at noon. Both doubleheaders will be played at Johnstown's Point Stadium.
