About the curriculum

In trying to understand how science finds order in the surrounding confusion, what better place to start with than geology.

-George Johnson, Fire in the Mind

The Pitt-Johnstown Energy & Earth Resources curriculum prepares students for careers in geology and geo-environmental science, as well as advanced geological study in graduate school.  We offer a "hands-on" program that applies classroom theory through numerous field trips and practical laboratory exercises.  Basically, the E&ER  major provides a well-rounded education and a solid foundation for a successful career in the geosciences.  Our classes are small and students benefit greatly from direct mentoring and teaching by our full-time faculty.  Although our primary mission is undergraduate teaching, all the geology professors are active in research in their respective areas of expertise.  For our students, this translates into a numerous opportunites for "beyond the classroom" experiences that range from Independent Study to Senior Research Projects.

Students majoring in other disciplines may also opt to pursue a minor in Geology. Also, non-majors may take any of several introductory courses in earth and space science to meet General Education requirements or to simply broaden their knowledge of the Earth and its place it the universe.
