#20 Glenville State Holds Off Lady Cats, 93-87

Kelsey Sleighter (Uniontown, Pa.)

each scored 16 points, but 20th-ranked and WVIAC-leading Glenville State (WV) College battled back from a 12-point first half deficit to hold off the Lady Cats, 93-87, Monday night in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown had its five game winning streak snapped and fell to 12-8 overall and 10-7 in the WVIAC.
Glenville State opened the game with a 3-pointer from Ashleigh Fossett, but the Lady Cats came right back and never trailed the rest of the first half.
Sleighter's
3-pointer from the corner put Pitt-Johnstown up 12-5 four minutes in, before the Lady Cats extended it to 19-9 on another
Sleighter
3-pointer less than two minutes later.
Pitt-Johnstown built it as large as 12 at 25-13 on
Jasmine Harper's (Cleveland Heights, OH)
bucket in the paint with 12:32 left, before the Pioneers began to claw their way back.
Glenville State outscored the Lady Cats, 35-23 the rest of the way to knot it at 48 at the half on a pair of Ginny Mills' free-throws with less than a minute left.
Kenyell Goodson's driving lay-up less than three minutes into the second half gave the Pioneers their first lead since early in the first half, but
Sleighter
answered with another 3-pointer to give the lead right back to Pitt-Johnstown at 56-54.
The Pioneers countered with an 16-5 run over the next five minutes, capped by Kenyona Simmons' lay-up, to give Glenville State a 70-61 advantage with 12:16 to play.
Pitt-Johnstown wasn't done yet. Two
Rachel Johnson (Palmyra, Pa.)
free-throws at 6:47 tied it at 72.
However, the Pioneers scored the next eight points to rebuild the lead to 80-72 on Mills' bucket.
Four straight points from
Fratz
got the deficit down to 85-81 with 1:07 on the clock, but Jessica Parsons and Mills combined to hit eight consecutive free-throws in the final 42 seconds to seal Glenville State 13th straight win.
Sleighter's
16 points and six rebounds, and
Fratz's
16 points paced five Lady Cat double-figure scorers.
Leah Hansen (Waterford, Pa.)
and
Johnson
each had 14 points and five rebounds, and
Harper
collected 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Pitt-Johnstown also got eight points and four rebounds from
Nicole Carman (Cleveland, OH)
.
The Lady Cats wrapped-up the night shooting 48.5% (33-68) from the floor, 9-17 from 3-point range, and 12-17 from the free-throw line. Glenville State shot 49.3% (34-69) from the field, 7-21 from behind the 3-point line, and 18-20 from the charity stripe.
Mills finished with a game-high 23 points, and Aesha Peters chipped in 19 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Pioneers, who improved to 19-2 overall and 14-1 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats begin a stretch of three straight WVIAC road games at the University of Charleston (WV) on Saturday. Pitt-Johnstown will return home to host its final two regular season doubleheaders against West Liberty (WV) University on February 21 and Seton Hill University on February 23.
