There is no charge for peer tutoring, and students may request up to two hours per week of tutoring in one or two classes per semester. Students may meet with their tutors at the ASC or any other public campus location (i.e., not a living space).
Our Philosophy of Tutoring
Peer tutors help students develop the kinds of skills they need to succeed independently in college. Sometimes the best way tutors can do this is by helping students review challenging course material. At other times tutors may show students a new way of approaching a difficult subject or may teach them a new study strategy. From time to time, a tutor may also assist a student who encounters difficulty with homework problems, but our tutors recognize that students are responsible for completing their homework on their own. We see our tutors as crucial members of our academic assistance team and consider them an important part of many students’ academic experience here at UPJ.
Please note: The ASC strives to provide a high-quality academic support program, so we only hire tutors who we feel will do a good job helping students master the subject matter. Because of this, and because we rely on student tutors to staff our peer tutoring program, we are not always able to fulfill every request for tutoring. We fill tutoring requests on a first-come, first-served basis, and if we’re not able to fulfill your tutoring request we suggest you consider some of the other academic assistance programs at the Center.
