Luther Hits 10 3-pointers in Mountain Cats' Win Over Bowie State

(Box Score) Bill Luther (Gibsonia, Pa.) scored a career-high 34 points and hit 10 3-pointers to tie the Pitt-Johnstown single-game record, and Nick Novak (Murrysville, Pa.) added 30 points to lead the Mountain Cats to a 106-94 non-conference victory over Bowie State (MD) University, Wednesday night in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 5-2.
Luther, who shot 11-14 from the field, connected on 10-13 from 3-point range to tie Jordan Miller's (Vinco, Pa.) single-game record set exactly three years ago to the day. Miller made 10 against Salem International (WV) University on December 5, 2009.
The Mountain Cats started fast. Nick Novak (Murrysville, Pa.) gave Pitt-Johnstown a 12-7 lead less than four minutes in, and Miller pushed it out to 19-12 at 13:55.
After another basket by Novak just over a minute later gave the Mountain Cats their largest lead of the half at 23-14 Bowie State stormed back.
The Bulldogs used a 15-5 run over the next five minutes to take their first lead at 29-28 on a Bryon Westmoreland lay-up at 9:10.
Ray Gatling's bucket with 5:06 left in the half put Bowie State up by four, but the Mountain Cats outscored the Bulldogs 8-2 the rest of the way to take a 44-38 halftime advantage when Noah Hartung's (Butler, Pa.) 3-pointer from the top of the key fell as time expired.
Bowie State pulled to within one 2:25 into the second half, but Luther's sixth 3-pointer of the game rebuilt the Pitt-Johnstown lead to 60-53 with 15:16 to play.
Two more 3-pointers from Luther got the lead into double digits at the 13-minute mark, and another basket by Novak at 8:34 made it a 21-point advantage.
Bowie State scored the next nine points and outscored the Mountain Cats 17-9 over the next 4:18 to pull to within 11 at 89-78 on Gatling's lay-up and free-throw.
However, the lead was never in jeopardy. Luther's record-tying 10th 3-pointer came with 3:14 to play get the lead back to 16 points and the Mountain Cats coasted to the 12-point win.
Luther's 34 points paced four Pitt-Johnstown players who scored in double figures. Novak had 30 points, including 11-15 from the free-throw line. Novak also had a game-high eight assists, six rebounds and five steals, while Miller finished with 16 points (4 3-pointers), four rebounds, and six assists. Andrew Cressler (Pittsburgh, Pa.) collected a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to round out the double figure scorers.
Novak currently stands in fifth-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,566 points and third on the assists list with 430, while Miller is second on the all-time 3-point field goal list (233) and 18th on the scoring list with (1,104 pts.).
The Mountain Cats shot 50.8% (33-65) for the game, and made 17 of their 31 3-pointers. Pitt-Johnstown, which held a 39-29 advantage on the glass, also shot 23-30. Bowie State shot an impressive 57.1% (36-63) from the floor, 6-16 from behind the 3-point line, and 16-22 from the charity stripe.
Westmoreland, who leads NCAA Division II in scoring at 28.4 points per game, and Najee White each scored 26 points for Bowie State, which dropped to 3-5 on the season.
The Mountain Cats will break for Finals Week, before hosting a WVIAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats against Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Saturday, December 15. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 1 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3 p.m.
