Mountain Cats Earn 78-71 Win at D&E

Nick Novak (Murrysville, Pa.)
scored 19 points to lead five double figure scorers, and the Mountain Cats shot 59% in the second half to open-up a 15-point advantage en route to a 78-71 WVIAC victory at Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Saturday. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 4-2 overall and evened in record in conference-play at 2-2.
Jordan Miller (Vinco, Pa.)
and
Bill Luther (Gibsonia, Pa.)
each
hit 3-pointers to open the game put the Mountain Cats up 6-0, before Davis & Elkins used a quick 10-3 spurt to take their only lead of the first half at 10-9.
Pitt-Johnstown pushed it back out to a six-point advantage on a
Nick Novak (Murrysville, Pa.)
basket, then to nine at 35-26 on two
Novak
free-throws.
The Senators kept battling back, but
Andrew Cressler's (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
third 3-pointer of first half with less than two minutes to go made it 38-31.
The Senators clawed back again and scored the final six points cut it to 38-37 at the break.
However, Pitt-Johnstown never gave up the lead and used a 17-5 run, capped by
Luther's
3-pointer from the corner, to start the second half and to extend it to 55-48.
Three free-throws from
Miller
midway through the half gave the Mountain Cats their largest lead of the game at 63-48.
The Senators countered with a 24-11 run of their own to pull to within three at 74-71 with 1:55 on the clock, but
Cressler
and
Novak
hit short jumpers on the Mountain Cats' next two possessions to help seal the seven-point victory.
Novak
led Pitt-Johnstown with 19 points and game-highs of 10 assists and four steals.
Cressler
had 16 points, including 4-4 from 3-point range, and six rebounds, while
Miller
finished with 15 points.
Luther
had 12 points, all on 3-pointers, and six rebounds, and
Ian Vescovi (Patton, Pa.)
rounded out the double figure scorers wi
th 10 points, five rebounds, and four blocks.
Novak
currently stands in fifth-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,536 points and fifth on the assists list with 422, while
Miller
is second on the all-time 3-point field goal list (229) and 18th on the scoring list with (1,088 pts.).
The Mountain Cats shot 53.6% (59.3% second half), and hit 11 3-pointers. Pitt-Johnstown was also 7-10 from the free-throw line. Davis & Elkins shot was held to 43.9% shooting. The Senators were also 12-29 from behind the 3-point line and 9-14 from the charity stripe.
D'Quan Lynch's game-highs of 21 points and nine rebounds paced three Davis & Elkins' double figure scorers.
With the loss, the Senators dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats will host a non-conference game against Bowie State University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center, before breaking for Finals Week. The Mountain Cats will then host a WVIAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats against Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Saturday, December 15. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 1 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3 p.m.
