Assistant Professor of Chemistry

The Chemistry Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown invites applications for a tenure stream, full-time position in Physical Chemistry at the Assistant Professor level.  Candidates must possess a Ph.D. by hire date.  The Chemistry Department offers a BS in Chemistry and Biochemistry.  For more information visit our web site: www.upj.pitt.edu/chemistry

Responsibilities:
Teaching duties include lower and upper level chemistry courses, particularly two-term upper division physical chemistry with labs, general chemistry with labs, and upper level course(s) in the applicant’s area of expertise.  The successful candidate will prepare laboratories for execution and develop new laboratory experiments.  New faculty will be expected to contribute to departmental teaching requirements and responsibilities at all levels of our programs.  The ability to teach lecture and laboratory courses for health professions and general education courses for non-science majors is desirable.  Other responsibilities include maintaining currency in one’s area of expertise, establishing an active research program involving undergraduates, student advising, service to the department and the university, and contributing to the maintenance of department instrumentation.   

Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field (completed by time of hire); ability to teach physical chemistry, a commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, and the ability to establish a research program appropriate for undergraduates; evidence of experience in modern instrumentation used in physical chemistry; effective oral and written communication skills; evidence of experience teaching courses in physical and general chemistry and associated lab courses.  Ability to teach physical and general chemistry should be documented by at least one of the following: letter of reference, peer review of teaching, student evaluations, or teaching awards.

Starting Date:  August 2013
