Dr. Reinhard Heinisch teaches courses in comparative and international politics with an emphasis on Western Europe, the European Union, and Latin America.  His research focuses on comparative labor market policies, political populism, the European Union as well as Austrian and German Politics.  He has published numerous articles on these topics and completed a book on Austrian political change titled Populism, Proporz, Pariah - Austria Turns Right.  His other professional activities include working for the U.S. State Department by briefing designated U.S. ambassadors prior to their Congressional confirmation hearings, and as a regular commentator for Austrian National Television and print media, and directing an international annual Summer University in Austria dedicated to questions of economic innovation and competitiveness.  He has also taught courses at the University of Pittsburgh's Oakland campus and lectured at many different American and international universities and academic venues.  He also serves on the Faculty Advisory Board and the Regional Advisory Board of the European Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh.  As Director of International Studies, he is responsible for the International Studies Certificate program and other internationally - oriented activities and programs on campus.  Since 2002, Dr. Heinisch has taken groups of students from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and elsewhere to Service-Learning programs in rural Bolivia, where the participants are enrolled in University coursework while helping build an orphanage and a village school.
