Men's Soccer Wins WVIAC Team Sportsmanship Award 12/09/08...Head Coach Eric Kinsey's Mountain Cat men's soccer team garnered the inaugural WVIAC Team Sportsmanship Award for the 2008 fall sports. The award, was proposed by the league's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) last summer and was selected by head coaches and game officials from each team sport. Men's Soccer Finishes Ranked 10th in Region
11/13/08...Head coach Eric Kinsey's Mountain Cat men's soccer team finished the 2008 season ranked 10th in the NSCAA/adidas Atlantic Regional Rankings. Pitt-Johnstown, which finished the season at 10-9-1, rounded out the top 10, when the rankings were released Nov. 12... (NSCAA Atlantic Region Rankings)
Millersville University was the top-ranked team, with a 16-3-0 overall record. Other notable WVIAC teams include Davis & Elkins (WV) College ranked 7th with a 12-7-3 record and West Virginia Wesleyan at 8th with an 11-8-2 overall record.
Men's Soccer Falls at WV Wesleyan in WVIAC Semifinals
11/06/08...Brett Fackenthal scored goals early in each half to lead top-seeded West Virginia College to a 3-0 victory over the #5-seeded Pitt-Johnstown men's soccer team in Thursday night's WVIAC Semifinal match in Buckhannon, WV. The Mountain Cats, who reached the conference semifinals for the second straight year, finished the season with a 10-9-1 overall record.
West Virginia Wesleyan's Brett Fackenthal opened the scoring off of Joe Johns' corner kick at the 7:07 mark of the first half. Fackenthal increased the lead to 2-0 just :52 into the second half when he beat a pair of Mountain Cat defenders and found the back of the net behind Pitt-Johnstown goalkeeper Craig Neff (Elizabethtown, Pa.). The Bobcats set the final score at 3-0 when Fackethal set up Diego Michelato's goal with a throughball in the 70th minute.
Neff faced 18 shots and made six saves, but suffered the loss and fell to 9-9-1. George Rowley saw eight Mountain Cat shots and made five saves to secure the shutout and help the Bobcats advance to Saturday's WVIAC Championship match.
West Virginia Wesleyan, now 11-7-2 on the season, will take Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College, who defeated Davis & Elkins (WV) College 2-1 for the 2008 WVIAC title.
