Volleyball Drops WVIAC Opener to #21 Wheeling Jesuit

(Box Score) Kelsey Shanabrook (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) had 10 kills and six digs, but 21st-ranked Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University came into the Sports Center Wednesday night and dealt the Lady Cat volleyball team a 3-1 loss to open the 2012 WVIAC schedule. Pitt-Johnstown had its four-game winning streak snapped and slipped to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in conference-play.
The Cardinals won the first two sets 25-18 and 25 13. Pitt-Johnstown battled back with with a 25-22 win in set three, but Wheeling Jesuit put the match away with a 25-14 victory in the fourth set.
Along with Shanabrook, Danielle Fleeger (Clarion, Pa.) added eight kills, and Karen Schmidt had six kills and 11 digs. In addition, Beth Kendera (Johnstown, Pa.) chipped in five kills and two blocks, while Larissa Swank (Boswell, Pa.) had five kills and one block.
Kayla Petrilla (Johnstown, Pa.) led the Lady Cats with 18 set assists. Nikki Oakes (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had nine assists and five digs.
Kelsey Kohler (Johnstown, Pa.) finished with a game-high 25 digs.
With the win, Wheeling Jesuit improved to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats travel to Mount Aloysius College for a non-conference match on Saturday, before hosting West Liberty (WV) University for a WVIAC match on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Sports Center.
