Lundgren Named First-Team NWCA All-Academic Wrestling Team;
Four Other Tabbed Honorable Mention
05/14/12...Five Pitt-Johnstown wrestlers have been named to 2011-12 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division II All-Academic Wrestling Teams, including First-Team selection Zach Lundgren (157 lbs.) (DuBois, Pa.). In addition, Justin Harold (165 lbs.) (Leechburg, Pa.), Josh Krupa (HWT.) (Bedford, Pa.), Myers Miller (165 lbs.) (Bolivar, Pa.), and Keith Ryan (174 lbs.) The 2011-2012 Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team consists of 166 student-athletes from 40 universities and colleges. Thirty-seven members were named to the first team, 45 members to the second team, and 82 were named as honorable mention. St. Cloud State (MN) University place four members on the first team, while Augustana (S.D.) College and the University of Nebraska at Kearney each placed three members on the first team. Four student-athletes were named to the team for the fourth time. They were Luke Rynish from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Jacob D. Horn from St. Cloud State, Ethan Harris from the University of Indianapolis, and Jordan White from Nebraska-Kearney.
Lundgren, a two-time NWCA First-Team All-Academic Wrestling Team selection and two-time honorable mention choice, has a 3.23 GPA in Environmental Studies. The four-year letterman and two-time NCAA Division II National Qualifier posted a 27-5 record in 2011-12 on his way to becoming an All-American with a seventh-place finish at this year’s National Tournament. Lundgren also won the championship at the season-opening Washington and Jefferson College Collegiate Open on November 12 and was the runner-up at the 2012 Super Region I Tournament in Pembroke, N.C.
Harold (165 lbs.), Josh Krupa (HWT.), Miller (165 lbs.), and Ryan (174 lbs.) all garnered Honorable Mention NWCA All-Academic Team honors.
The University of Mary recorded the highest team grade point average (GPA) in the Nineteenth Annual Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team competition and has won the Academic National Championship. This is the first time that the University of Mary has achieved this honor. Nine other NCAA II schools have also won the National Championship. They include Wisconsin-Parkside, Fort Hays State (KS) University, Indianapolis, Colorado School of Mines, Truman State University, West Liberty (WV) University, Minnesota State University-Mankato, the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the Nebraska-Kearney. Ten of the top twenty academic teams came from the North Region, four came from the East Region, four came from the West, and two came from Midwest Regions. The Team GPA is calculated by averaging the cumulative grade point averages of ten wrestlers from each team of which eight of those wrestlers must have competed in their team's NCAA II National Qualifying Tournament.
