Mountain Cats Split at Shepherd

The Mountain Cats split a doubleheader at Shepherd (WV) University to close out the regular season on Sunday. Pitt-Johnstown won the completion of Saturday's suspended game, 12-7, but suffered a 14-12 loss in game two.
Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.)
homered twice and
Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.)
and
Jeff Campbell (Brackenridge, Pa.)
added homers for the Mountain Cats, now 24-25 overall and 17-17 in the WVIAC North.
In the completion of Saturday's suspended game, the Mountain Cats opened up a 7-1 lead in the third inning and went on to defeat Shepherd, 12-7.
Pitt-Johnstown built a 3-1 lead, before the rain came and
forced the suspension after two innings.
Nathan Minnich's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first gave the Rams a 1-0 advantage, but Pitt-Johnstown answered with three in the top of the second, highlighted by
Campbell's
two-run home run.
The Mountain Cats made it 7-1 with three more runs in the third, including a two-run home run by
Morrow
, before the Rams cut it to 7-4 with three runs of their own, including in the bottom of the frame.
Pitt-Johnstown got all three of those runs back in the fifth with RBI's from
Mike Palkovitz (Mechanicsburg, Pa.)
,
Nate Sabados (DuBois, Pa.)
and
Campbell
to push it out to 10-4.
Shepherd got run-producing base hits from Jake Cook and Brandon Coffey in their have of the fifth, but the Mountain Cats came back with a run in the sixth on

single that plated

, before going on to the 12-7 win.
Palkovitz
went 4-for-4 with two RBI and three runs, while
Westover
had three hits and scored twice.
Campbell
added two hits, including a homer and three RBI, and
Nathan Pope (Hollidaysburg, Pa.)
collected two hits, drove in a pair, and scored two runs.
Morrow
belted a two-run home run, and
Jake Warner (Pittsburgh, Pa
.) chipped in two hits and an RBI.
Heath Singer (Newville, Pa.)
picked-up his first collegiate win after tossing three innings in relief of starter

allowed three runs on six hits.
John Fees (Carrolltown, Pa.)
worked a scoreless seventh inning for the Mountain Cats.
In Sunday's second game, Shepherd used an eight-run fourth inning to build a 12-5 lead and held off Pitt-Johnstown, 14-12.
Westover's
long two-run homer over the left field wall in the top of the first, and
Zach Vignero's

bases loaded fielder's choice that plated
Pope
in the second gave the Mountain Cats a 3-0 lead.
Shepherd answered with a run in their half of the second, but Pitt-Johnstown tacked on a pair of runs in the third to make it 5-1.
Nash Hutter hit a two-run homer, and Jake Cook scored on a
Paul Tunink (Indiana, Pa.)
wild pitch to cut the Rams' deficit to 5-4 after three innings.
Hutter struck again for the Rams. This time, his grand slam off of
Nate Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.)
in an eight run fourth inning gave Shepherd it first lead of the day at 12-5.
Pitt-Johnstown clawed back with four runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh on
Morrow's
home run, but that was as close as it would get.
Westover
had two hits, and drove in two with his home run, while
Palkovitz
had two hits and two RBI.
Morrow
added a solo home run in the loss, and
Pope
had two hits and three RBI.
Plummer
took the loss in relief and dropped to 0-2 after giving up five runs on two hits.
Plummer
did not record an out.
With the split, Shepherd is now 27-17 and 19-12 in thenWVIAC North.
