Mountain Cats Fall in Nine Innings at Shepherd

(Box Score) Jeff Campbell (Brackenridge, Pa.) had four hits and Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.) belted a solo home run, but Shepherd erased a 6-0 deficit before defeating the Mountain Cats, 8-7, in nine innings in Shepherdstown, W.Va. on Saturday. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was suspended by rain after two innings with Pitt-Johnstown, 23-24 overall and 16-16 in the WVIAC North, leading, 3-1. The teams will finish the suspended game and play a nine-inning game on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
In the opener, Shepherd battled back from an early six-run deficit to send it to extra innings, before taking an 8-7 win on Brandon Coffey's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
Morrow's two-out solo homer in the top of the first gave the Mountain Cats a quick 1-0 lead.
Pitt-Johnstown added five more in the second. Joe Galbraith (Brookville, Pa.) led off with a base hit and came around to score on Campbell's double to center, before Morrow's sacrifice fly plated Campbell. Two batters later, Mike Palkovitz' (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) hit drove in a pair with a single, and Nathan Pope (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) closed out the scoring with an RBI single to make it 6-0.
Ryan Messina connected for a two-run home run in a three-run Shepherd second inning to cut it to 6-3.
Two unearned runs on Nathan Minnich's two-run single in the fourth got Shepherd to within one, before the Rams tied it at six with another run in the fifth.
It stayed that way until the ninth inning when Zach Vignero's (Johnstown, Pa.) sacrifice fly to left field chased home pinch runner Sam Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) to put the Mountain Cats back in front.
However, the Rams tied it in their half of the ninth, before Coffey's two-out walk-off RBI single off of Mountain Cat reliever Kody Reighard (Salix, Pa.) gave Shepherd the 8-7 victory.
Campbell went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Palkovitz had three hits and a pair of RBI. Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) and Drew Ebersole (Martinsburg, Pa.) each had two hits, and Morrow homered and drove in two to lead Pitt-Johnstown.
Reighard took the loss and dropped to 0-6 after allowing two runs on three hits in 2.2 inning in relief of starter Derek Younker (Big Cove Tannery, Pa.). Younker pitched the first six innings and surrendered six runs (3 earned) on 11 hits.
In game two, Pitt-Johnstown built a 3-1 lead, before the rain came and forced the suspension after two innings.
Minnich's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first gave the Rams a 1-0 advantage, but Pitt-Johnstown answered with three in the top of the second, highlighted by Campbell's two-run home run.
With the win, Shepherd improved to 26-18 overall and 18-11 in the WVIAC North.
The Mountain Cats wrap-up the a three-game WVIAC Northern Division series at Shepherd on Sunday.
