Mountain Cats Suffer 16-6 Loss at Wheeling Jesuit

Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University got a strong pitching performance from Tony Acierno and used a 13-run fifth inning to break open a one run game in a 16-6 WVIAC Northern Division victory over the Mountain Cats, Sunday afternoon in Wheeling, W.Va.
Drew Ebersole (Martinsburg, Pa.)
hit a three-run home run, and
Mike Palkovitz (Mechanicsburg, Pa.)
had two hits and an RBI for Pitt-Johnstown, now 20-19 overall and 13-11 in conference-play.
The Mountain Cats struck for a run in the top of the first.
Zach Vignero (Johnstown, Pa.)
was hit by a pitch to start the game, moved to a third on a throwing error, and scored on
Kyle Morrow's (McVeytown, Pa.)
groundout.
Wheeling Jesuit tied it in the second and took a 2-1 lead on Steven Buffo's run producing single through the right side in the fourth.
Jordan Kraus and Robbie Davia each belted a two-run home runs, before Davia connected for his second homer of the inning, a three-run shot, in the 12-run Cardinals' fifth to push it out to 15-1.
Palkovitz'
single up the middle broke up Acierno's no-hit bid with two outs in the Pitt-Johnstown sixth, but was stranded on first base.
After Wheeling Jesuit added another run in the sixth, the Mountain Cats got RBI singles from
Palkovitz
and
Nathan Pope (Hollidaysburg, Pa.)
and a three-run home run from
Ebersole
in then eighth inning to cut it to 16-6, before the cardinals went on to the 16-6 win.
Acierno pitched the first seven innings and held Pitt-Johnstown one run on just one hit to earn the win.
Kody Reighard (Salix, Pa.)
fell to 0-5 after surrendering six runs on 10 hits in four innings.
Wheeling Jesuit improved to 16-21 overall and 10-16 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
The Mountain Cats travel to Concord (WV) University for a conference doubleheader on Wednesday and to Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College for a three-game WVIAC Northern Division series on Saturday and Sunday, before returning home to celebrate Senior Day with a doubleheader against Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Thursday, April 26 at 5 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
