Mountain Cats Split With Charleston

Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.), Zach Vignero (Johnstown, Pa.)
and
Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.)
all hit home runs to lead the Mountain Cats to a 14-4 win over the University of Charleston (WV) to open a West Virginia Conference doubleheader, Tuesday afternoon at the Point Stadium. The Golden Eagles bounced back with a 5-1 victory in the nightcap to earn the split. Pitt-Johnstown is now 19-17 overall and 12-9 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
In the opener, the Mountain Cats fell behind early, but belted three homeruns and scored in all six of their at-bats in the 14-4 victory.
Charleston got to Mountain Cat starter
Rylan Schnably (Bedford, Pa.)
for a pair of runs in the top of the first, but Pitt-Johnstown quickly tied in in their first at-bat.
Jake Warner (Dillsburg, Pa.)
doubled with one out on trotted home on
Morrow's
homer to left.
It was all Pitt-Johnstown after that.
Vignero's
two run blast in the Mountain Cat second inning made it 4-2, before
Westover
led off the third with a solo homerun to extend it 5-2.
Pitt-Johnstown scored four more in the fourth.
Vignero
and
Westover
each had RBI singles, and
Warner
doubled home a run, before scoring on a
Mike Palkovitz (Mechanicsburg, Pa.)
sacrifice fly.
The Mountain Cats batted around in the fifth and tacked on three more run to build it to 12-2, before going
on to the 14-4 victory.
Vignero
went 3-for -4 with two-run homer and five RBI, and
Warner
added three doubles and two RBI.
Morrow
homered and drove in four, while
Westover
was 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
After allowing two runs in the first inning,
Schnably
settled down and held Charleston to just a run on one hit over the next five innings to improve to 4-1.
Nate Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.)
pitched the seventh and allowed a solo homer to Igor Molina.
In the nightcap,
Corey Hill's double to the gap in right center chased home Ryan Hathaway from second to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 first inning lead.
Morrow's
single to left in the bottom of the third brought home
Warner
to tie it at one.
It stayed that way until the sixth when Molina drove a home run over the 410 sign in centerfield to give Charleston a 2-1 advantage. The Golden Eagles added another run in the sixth on Tim Rein's RBI single.
Molina's single in the seventh produced two more insurance runs runs for Charleston and set the final at 5-1.
Warner
singled and doubled, and
Morrow
added a base hit an an RBI to lead the Mountain Cats.
Nathan Pope (Hollidaysburg, Pa.)
suffered the loss and dropped to 0-2 after surrendering three runs on six hits in 5.1 innings.
With the split, the Golden Eagles are now 18-17 overall and 10-10 in the WVIAC South.
The Mountain Cats travel to Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University for a three-game WVIAC Northern Division series on Saturday and Sunday, before traveling to Concord (WV) University for a conference doubleheader on April 18. Pitt-Johnstown will play its final home doubleheader of the 2012 season on Thursday, April 26 against Davis & Elkins (WV) College at 5 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
