#8 Mercyhurst Takes Pair From Mountain Cats

Eighth-ranked Mercyhurst College ran out to first inning leads in both games of Sunday's non-conference doubleheader at the Point Stadium and went on to sweep the Mountain Cats 6-2 and 8-1. Pitt-Johnstown, which dropped three of the four games in the weekend series, fell to 9-10.
In the opener, Mercyhurst ran out to a 5-0 first inning lead and went on to defeat the Mountain Cats 6-2.
Mercyhurst sent 10 men to the plate in the top of the first and jumped out to a 5-0 lead.
Pitt-Johnstown answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on
Drew Westover's (Flinton, Pa.)
RBI single up the middle.
The Lakers added an insurance run in the seventh on Ethan Santora's solo homer and went on to the 6-2 win.
After building the early lead, Mercyhurst's pitching did the rest. Brad Duffy pitched the first five innings, allowed one run on three hits, and fanned 10, before Dan Altavilla tossed the final two innings and gave up a run on one hit.
Zach Vignero (Johnstown, Pa.)
and
Jake Warner (Dillsburg, Pa.)
each singled adn doubled, and
Westover
added a base hit and drove in two for Pitt-Johnstown.
Kody Reighard (Salix, Pa.)
fell to 0-3 after surrendering five runs (4 earned) on four hits in five innings of work.
In the nightcap, the Lakers built a 3-0 lead after two innings and never looked back in the 8-1 win.
Mountain Cat starter
Nathan Pope (Hollidaysburg, Pa.)
struck out the first four Mercyhurst hitters, but the Lakers got to
Pope
four three runs on four hits in the second inning.
Pitt-Johnstown got a run back in the fourth.
Joe Galbraith (Brookville, Pa.)
walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on
Jeff Campbell's (Brackenridge, Pa.)
double to the gap in left center.
However, Mercyhurst scored five runs more off of Mountain Cat relievers
Joe Novotny (Johnstown, Pa.)
and
Nate Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.)
over the final two innings to break the game open.
Campbell
went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while
Warner
and
Mike Palkovitz (Mechanicsburg, Pa.)
acounted for the Mountain Cats' other two hits.
Pope
took the loss and dropped to 0-1 after giving up three earned runs on six hits in four innings.
Novotny
allowed two runs in the two inings, and
Plummer
surrendered three runs in the seventh.
With the sweep, Mercyhurst improved to 15-5.
The Mountain Cats travel to Bluefield State (WV) College for a WVIAC doubleheader on Wednesday, before hosting conference rival Fairmont State (WV) University for a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
