Mountain Cats Split Twinbill with Chestnut Hill

After giving up four unearned runs in the eighth inning to suffer a 5-1 loss in Monday's opener, the Mountain Cat baseball tam bounced back with a 3-2 win on
C.J. Gahagan's (Martinsburg, Pa.)
ninth-inning sacrifice fly to split a doubleheader with Chestnuthill College in Fort Pierce, Fla. Pitt-Johnstown is 4-4.
In the opener, Chestnut Hill scored four unearned runs in the top of the eighth to break open a 1-1 game and go on to the 5-1 win.
Nathan Pope (Hollidaysburg, Pa.)
went 2-for-3, and
Mike Palkovitz (Mechanicsburg, Pa.)
had an RBI single to lead Pitt-Johnstown.
Derek Younker (Big Cove Tannery, Pa.)
pitched the first five innings and allowed one run on just one hit.
Andrew Keirn (Dillsburg, Pa.)
took the loss after allowing three unearned runs on just on hit.
In the nightcap,
Gahagan's
sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth proved to be the game winner in the Mountain Cats' 3-2 victory.
Gahagan
doubled and had a pair of RBI in the game.
Joe Novotny (Johnstown, Pa.)
got the win in relief for Pitt-Johnstown.
Novotny
didn't allow a base hit or a run and fanned three in two innings. Freshman
Elliott Chamberlain (Six Mile Run, Pa.)
started and gave up two runs (1 earned) on four hits in three innings.
Paul Tunink (Indiana, Pa.)
tossed four scoreless innings and struck out six.
The Mountain Cats continue their trip to Fort Pierce, FL with a doubleheader against Post (CT) University on Tuesday and a 9-inning game against Mercy (NY) College on Thursday. Following the spring trip, Pitt-Johnstown will return home to host a WVIAC doubleheader against West Virginia State University on March 13 at the Point Stadium.
