Lady Cats' Season Ends With Loss to Charleston in First Round of WVIAC Tournament

Cold shooting, including just 16% in the second half by the Lady Cats, allowed the University of Charleston (WV) to overcome a seven-point second half deficit and end Pitt-Johnstown's season with a 56-51 victory in Monday's First Round of the WVIAC Tournament in the Sports Center.
Nicole Carman (Cleveland, OH)
scored 13 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds for the Lady Cats, whose season came to an end with a 14-13 overall record.
In a tight first half, Charleston scored on its first possession, but was only able to extend it to as many as four points over the first 13 minutes of the game.
Pitt-Johnstown eventually tied it at 21 on two
Amber Smith (Morgantown, WV)
free-throws that ignited a 14-3 run over the next five minutes to build a nine-point Lady Cat advantage.
Smith's
lay-up on the next possession gave the Lady Cats their first lead of the night, before
Katie McBroom's (Derry, Pa.)
3-pointer from the corner capped the run and put Pitt-Johnstown up 33-24 with 1:23 left.
The Golden Eagles answered with back-to-back buckets of their own, including Erika Rousculp's lay-up with three seconds to go, to cut it to 33-28 at the half.
Charleston scored the first six points of the second half to maintain the momentum and tie it at 33 on Nicole Perry's 3-pointer.
Five straight points from
Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Pa.)
and a 3-pointers from
Carman
and
Kayla Loughner (Brinklow, MD)
pushed the Pitt-Johnstown lead back out to 44-37 at 14:34.
However, Pitt-Johnstown managed just seven more points the rest of the way.
The Golden Eagles tied it at 48 on a Lauren Davis 3-pointer with four minutes to play and took the lead for good on another Davis basket 30 seconds later.
Charleston extended it to as many as seven, before holding off the Lady Cats by five.
Carman
had 13 points and 12 rebounds, and
Fratz
added 12 points and six rebounds to lead Pitt-Johnstown.
Loughner
finished with eight points, and
Kelsey Sleighter (Uniontown, Pa.)
chipped-in four points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Neither team shot the ball well. Pitt-Johnstown shot just 28.1% (18-64) from the field and just 6-31 from behind the 3-point line. The Lady Cats did hit 9-11 from the charity stripe. The Golden Eagles finished the night shooting 33.8% (24-71) from the floor, 3-9 from 3-point range, and 5-13 from the free-throw line.
Davis paced three Charleston players who scored in double figures 17 points and 10 rebounds. Rousculp, the nation's leading rebounder, had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Kayla Dozier had 10 points for the Golden Eagles. who improved to 13-14 overall.
The Golden Eagles advance to the WVIAC Quarterfinals against second-seeded Concord (WV) University on Wednesday at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, W.Va.
