Students seeking services from the Office of Disability Services on the basis of a disability are required to submit documentation to verify eligibility under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Protection under these civil rights statutes is based upon documentation of a current disability that substantially limits a major life function.
When the documentation is received at the Office of Disability Services and reviewed, a staff member works with the idividual to determine reasonable and appropriate accomodations. The Office of Disability Services creates a Notification of Disability Letter to inform professors of the recommended accomodations. It is the student's responsibility to deliver a Notification Letter to each instructor and to discuss the implication of these accommodations as they relate to the fulfillment of course requirements.
Criteria for the source, scope and content of the documentation differs by disability. Please refer to the Documentation Guidelines for additional information.
