ATH11_024_WestoverD_TBaseball Sweeps Clarion to Open Season
02/21/12... (Game 1) (Game 2)  Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) hit two homeruns and drove in five runs to help then Mountain Cat baseball team sweep a doubleheader from Clarion University, 5-3 and 4-3, Tuesday afternoon in the season-opener at the Point Stadium.
In the opener, back-to-back doubles by Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) and Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.) gave the Mountain Cats a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Clarion scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Westover quickly tied it with a homerun over the left field screen on the second pitch he saw in the bottom of the frame.
Pitt-Johnstown made it 4-2 with two more runs in the fifth.  Roy's RBI groundout scored Scott Zubik (Pittsburgh, Pa.), before Zach Vignero (Johnstown, Pa.) scored on a wild pitch.
The Mountain Cats added an insurance run in the sixth.  Jake Warner (Dillsburg, Pa.) tripled to right center with one and scored on Nate Sabados' (DuBois, Pa.) single through the right side.
The Golden Eagles scored a run in the seventh to set the final at 5-3.
Sabados had two hits and an RBI, while Roy, Morrow and Westover each drove in runs for Pitt-Johnstown.
Derek Younker (Big Cove Tannery, Pa.) earned the win after pitching two scoreless innings of relief.  Younker allowed two hits and struck out a pair.  John Fees (Carrolltown, Pa.) earned the save after giving up one run.
In game two, Clarion scored a run in the top of the first on a wild pitch, but Westover answered again for Pitt-Johnstown in the third inning.  This time, Westover belted a three-run homer to left to put the Mountain Cats up 3-1.
The Golden Eagles answered with two runs in the top of the fifth to tie it, but Westover's sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the inning gave the lead back to Pitt-Johnstown, 4-3.
The Mountain Cats pitching staff did the rest.  Nate Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) and Joe Novotny (Johnstown, Pa.) each tossed scoreless innings to secure the 4-3 victory.
Westover's homer and four RBI accounted for all of the Pitt-Johnstown runs.
Ryan Socol (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked-up his first collegiate victory in relief.  Novotny allowed one hit in the seventh to earn the save.
The Mountain Cats are scheduled to play Shepherd (WV) University in a non-conference series this weekend at a site to be determined.  Pitt-Johnstown will then travel to Fort Pierce, FL for the annual Spring Trip from March 4-9.
