Lady Cats Suffer 91-69 Loss at Shepherd

Sara Trimarco (Hollidaysburg, Pa.)
scored 18 points to lead three Lady Cat double-figure scorers, but Shepherd (WV) University extended a five-point second half lead to as many as 24 in a 91-69 WVIAC victory over the Lady Cats, Wednesday evening in Shepherdstown, W.Va. Pitt-Johnstown, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, slipped to 12-11 overall and 10-9 in conference-play.
Gabby Flinchum scored Shepherd's first 10 points to help the Rams double-up the Lady Cats, 10-5 in the early going.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from
Kayla Loughner (Brinklow, MD)
gave the Lady Cats a slim 11-10 lead, but Shepherd answered with a 20-5 run, capped by Prisilla Moseh's 3-pointer, over the next 8:30 to put the Rams in front 30-16 with 7:02 left in the half.
Pitt-Johnstown clawed to within five on three occasions, with the last coming on
Inaya Stephenson's (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
lay-up with 25 seconds left, before Shepherd took a 40-33 halftime advantage on Emily Daniel's bucket as time expired.
In a second half full of runs, six straight points from
Nicole Carman (Cleveland, OH)
made it a five-point game at 46-41 four minutes into the second half. Shepherd scored the next nine to match its 14-point first half lead on Daniel's 3-pointer.
The Lady Cats fought right back with eight consecutive points of their own, including another 3-pointer by
Carman
, to cut it to 55-49 with 13:40 remaining, but Pitt-Johnstown just couldn't get over the hump.
The Rams countered with a basket from Hannah Safren midway through the half to close out a 10-0 spurt and extend the lead to 16.
Shepherd built the lead to as many as 24 with just second remaining, before coasting to the 22-point win.
Trimarco
led the Lady Cats with 18 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Carman
had 13 points, and
Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Pa.)
chipped in 11 points.
Rachel Johnson (Palmyra, Pa.)
scored nine points, while
Grace Hyland (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
and
Loughner
each finished with six points for Pitt-Johnstown.
Shepherd took advantage of 24 Lady Cat turnovers and turned them into 34 points. The Rams also out-rebounded Pitt-Johnstown 47-24 and turned 20 offensive boards into 27 points.
Pitt-Johnstown shot 43.9% (25-57) from the field, 10-26 from 3-point range, and 9-11 from the free-throw line. Shepherd shot 50.7% (38-75) from the floor, 6-15 from behind the 3-point line, and 9-12 from the charity stripe.
Daniel's 24 points led all scorers and four Rams who scored in double figures. Flinchum added 22 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for Shepherd, which has won seven of its last games, improve to 16-10 overall and 13-7 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats travel to WVIAC games at West Virginia State on Saturday and West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, before returning home to celebrate Senior Day and close out the regular season with a conference doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against Seton Hill on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 1 p.m. with the men's game at 3 p.m.
