Dominating Start Leads Lady Cats Over Bluefield State

(Box Score) The Lady Cat basketball team ran out to a 25-point halftime lead on 11 of Kaitlynn Fratz' (Accident, MD) game-high 17 points in a dominating 77-42 West Virginia Conference victory over Bluefield State (WV) College, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 9-10 overall and 7-8 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats' dominating first half performance set the tone for the day. Pitt-Johnstown, which led wire-to-wire, held Bluefield State to just 29.6% shooting and 17 points in the first half en route to a 42-17 lead.
The Lady Cats opened-up a 14-4 advantage on a Sara Trimarco (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) 3-pointer nine minutes into the game.
Shae Mebane and Dragana Tomic answered with back-to-back baskets for the Lady Blues, but it was all Pitt-Johnstown the rest of the way. The Lady Cats outscored Bluefield State 28-9 the rest of the way to build the 25-point halftime advantage.
Grace Hyland's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) jumper with 4:22 remaining extended the lead to 34-15, before the Lady Blues scored their final two points of the half 1:20 later.
The Lady Cats netted the last eight points, including two of Fratz' 11 first half points from the free-throw line with four seconds left.
It was more of the same in the second half. Bluefield State got the deficit down to 21 on Tomic's basket at 15:41, but the Lady Cats quickly matched their 25-point halftime lead on Nicole Carman's (Cleveland, OH) 3-pointer a few possessions later.
Pitt-Johnstown pushed the lead to 31 on Inaya Stephenson's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) free-throws midway through the half, before coasting the the 35-point victory.
Fratz led all scorers and three Lady Cats who scored in double figures with 17 points and a game-high six assists. Kelsey Sleighter (Uniontown, Pa.) had 12 points, and Amber Smith (Morgantown, WV) added 10 points and six rebounds. Carman chipped-in nine points and a game-high eight rebounds, while Hyland and Trimarco each finished with nine points and six rebounds.
The Lady Cats, who held a commanding 44-30 advantage on the glass, ended the day shooting 45.2% (28-62) from the field, 7-23 from 3-point range and 14-18 from the free-throw line. Bluefield State was held to just 35.7% (20-56) shooting from the floor, including 0-9 from behind the 3-point line. The Lady Blues were also 2-5 from the charity stripe.
Tomic scored 12 points and Tasia Nolan tallied 10 points and seven rebounds for Bluefield State, which dropped its 10th straight game and fell to 4-18 overall and 3-13 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats travel to Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University for a WVIAC game on Monday, before hosting a conference doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against West Liberty (WV) University on Thursday. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., before the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
