Mountain Cats Shoot 69% in 115-84 Win Over Bluefield State

The Mountain Cats shot 69% from the field for the game and used a 31-12 run over the final 11 minutes of the first half to break open a two-point game and build a 21-point halftime lead in a 115-84 WVIAC victory over Bluefield State (WV) College, Saturday in the Sports Center.
Jordan Miller's (Vinco, Pa.)
22 points led seven Mountain Cats who scored in double figures to help Pitt-Johnstown improve to 12-8 overall and 10-5 in the WVIAC.
Matt Palo's (North Huntingdon, Pa.)
basket at 11:36 gave the Mountain Cats a slim 19-15 advantage.
Chase Morgan followed with a jumper of his own on Bluefield State's next possession to cut it to two, but Pitt-Johnstown answered by outscoring the Big Blues 31-12 the rest of the way to go up by 21 at the break.
Another
Palo
basket at 8:31 gave the Mountain Cats their first double-digit lead of the day, before consecutive 3-pointers from
Bill Luther (Gibsoina, Pa.)
and
Miller
pushed it out to 47-29 with 1:21 remaining.
Miller
then hit one of two free-throws with three seconds on the clock to extend it to 50-29 at the half.
Pitt-Johnstown made it a 26-point game two minutes into the second half on a pair of
Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.)
free-throws, but the Big crept back to within 21 on Devontae Royal free-throws at 16:51.
However, the Mountain Cats used a quick 11-3 run over the next two minutes, capped by
Nick Novak's (Murrysville, Pa.
) lay-up and free-throw, to make it 70-41.
Ian Vescovi's (Patton, Pa.
) lay-up with 57 seconds left gave Pitt-Johnstown its largest lead of the day at 35.
Miller
scored 22 points, including five 3-pointers, while
Novak
had 17 points and six assists, and
Vescovi
added 17 points, six rebounds, and five assists to lead a group of seven Mountain Cat double-figure scorers.
Palo
had 16 points and six rebounds.
Luther
chipped-in 12 points and seven rebounds, and
Kevin Byer (Davidsville, Pa.)
and
Grubbs
each had 10 points.
Grubbs
also pulled down six rebounds for the Mountain Cats our held a 40-20
advantage on the boards.
Grubbs
stands in third-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,611 points and second on the all-time rebounding list with 916 rebounds, just 29 shy of
Don Elzer
for the Pitt-Johnstown record.
Novak
is 11th on the scoring list with 1,257 points and eighth on the assists list with 351, while
Jordan Miller
is third on the all-time 3-point field goal list with 185.
The Mountain Cats shot 68.9% (42-61) from the floor, 8-14 from 3-point range, and 23-31 from the charity stripe. Bluefield State shot 44.8% (30-67) from the field, 12-23 from behind the 3-point line, and 12-16 from the free-throw line.
Alex Webb scored 22 points and had five rebounds, and Vincent Rogers collected 20 points and seven rebounds for the Big Blues, who suffered their 18th straight loss and fell to 1-19 overall and 0-16 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats travel to Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University for a WVIAC game on Monday, before hosting a conference doubleheader with the Lady Cats against No. 2-ranked West Liberty (WV) University on Thursday. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., before the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
