Mountain Cats Fall to Ohio Valley, 82-79

Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.)
scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but Ohio Valley (WV) University battled back from a pair of 10-point deficits to deal the Mountain Cats an 82-69 WVIAC loss in the Sports Center on Saturday. Pitt-Johnstown fell to 8-7 overall and 6-4 in the WVIAC.
In a back-and-forth first 15 minutes of the game that saw the teams exchange the lead 14 times, Pitt-Johnstown erased a three-point deficit and opened-up a 22-17 lead on
Nick Novak's (Murrysville, Pa.)
lay-up at 8:57.
Ohio Valley scored the next six on 3-pointers by Lance Jones and Jordan Brooks to regain the lead 25-24, 2:15 later.
However, the Mountain Cats outscored the Fighting Scots 14-8 over the final 5:36 to take a five-point halftime lead.
Paul Weatherly (Johnstown, Pa.)
scored four quick points, and
Jordan Miller (Vinco, Pa.)
hit a pair of 3-pointers, before
Novak
scored with 1:52 left to push the lead to 38-28.
Ohio Valley answered with five straight points in the final minute to pull to within five at the break.
Grubbs'
lay-up 3:21 into the second half rebuild the Pitt-Johnstown lead to nine, and
Bill Luther (Gibsonia, Pa.)
scored to match the Mountain Cat's 10-point first half lead to put Pitt-Johnstown up 50-40 with 15:38 to play.
The Fighting Scots roared back with a 15-2 run over the next three minutes to grab the lead again at 55-52 on Kendall Allison's dunk.
Luther's
3-pointer at the midway point of the half gave the lead back to the Mountain Cats at 58-57, but 10 straight points from Austin Cunningham over a span of 1:32 put Ohio Valley in front 71-65 with six minutes remaining.
After the fighting Scots pushed the lead to seven with 4:06 to go,
Grubbs'
bucket made it a one-point game with 1:08 on the clock, but Pitt-Johnstown could not climb the who way back.
Grubbs
led all scorers and three Mountain Cats who scored in double-figures with 22 points and eight rebounds.
Novak
had 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists, while
Miller
added 13 points, including 10 in the first half.
Luther
and
Weatherly
finished with nine points and four rebounds apiece, and
Matt Palo (North Huntingdon, P
a.)
collected six points and six rebounds off the bench.
Grubbs
moved in fourth-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,533 points and second-place on the all-time rebounding list with 877 rebounds.
Novak
is 14th on the scoring list with 1,149 points and eighth on the assists list with 334, while
Jordan Miller
is fifth on the all-time 3-point field goal list with 167.
Pitt-Johnstown, which dominated the glass with a 45-23 advantage, shot 54% from the floor, 5-10 from 3-point range, and 6-13 from the free-throw line. Ohio Valley ended the day shooting 49.3% from the field and 13-27 from behind the 3-point line. The Fighting Scots were also 3-4 from the charity stripe.
Allison's 19 points led all five Ohio Valley starters who scored in double-figures. Cunningham had tallied 16 points and 10 assists, and Rodney Everage had 15 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high six blocks to help led the Fighting Scots. Ohio Valley improved to 5-8 overall and 5-5 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats travel to WVIAC games at Seton Hill University on Saturday and Ohio Valley on January 26, before returning home to host a conference doubleheader against the University of Charleston (WV) on Saturday January 28 in the Sports Center. Tip-off for the women’s game is 1 p.m., with the men’s game to follow at 3 p.m.
